Three GSE Stocks Gain as Five Equities End in Red

Investors Trade Over GHS 33M on GSE, Market Indices Stay Flat

Ghana’s stock market delivered a mixed performance at the close of trading, with three listed companies recording share price gains while five others ended the session in negative territory, despite a dramatic surge in trading activity that pushed total volume up by 761%.

A total of 6,878,491 shares changed hands on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), representing a market value of GH¢41.50 million. The performance marked a significant increase in trading volume compared with Tuesday, October 27, highlighting renewed activity among investors even as the broader market struggled to make meaningful gains.

However, the increase in trading activity did not translate into widespread share price appreciation. Out of the 29 listed equities that participated in trading, only three advanced, while five declined and the remaining stocks recorded no price changes during the session.

The mixed outcome leaves investors weighing the opportunities presented by individual stock gains against the persistent pressure on selected equities.

Trading Volume Explodes by 761%

The most striking development from the session was the sharp increase in trading volume, with more than 6.87 million shares exchanged in a single day.

The 761% improvement over the previous trading session represents a substantial jump in market activity, drawing attention to the level of investor participation across selected listed companies.

Despite the surge, trading was heavily concentrated in a handful of equities, with MTN Ghana emerging as the dominant stock by volume.

The telecommunications giant recorded approximately 5.83 million shares traded, accounting for the overwhelming majority of shares exchanged during the session. CalBank followed with 558,325 shares, while Guinness Ghana Breweries recorded 139,632 shares and Kasapreko registered 105,350 shares.

The concentration of trading in MTN Ghana suggests that the stock remained a major focal point for market participants, even though its share price declined slightly.

The session generated GH¢41.50 million in total trading value, while the overall market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢264.9 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.7 billion.

The sharp rise in volume, however, should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a broad market rally. The number of shares traded measures market activity, while price movements provide a separate indication of how individual equities performed.

Intravenous Infusions Leads Market Winners

Intravenous Infusions emerged as the strongest performer among the session’s gainers, recording a 9.8% appreciation in its share price to close at GH¢0.56 per share.

The company’s performance placed it ahead of other advancing stocks and made it the standout winner in a session characterised by limited positive movements across the market.

GCB Bank also recorded a strong performance, gaining 3.68% as its share price moved higher during the trading day. The bank’s advance provided a positive signal for investors following the performance of financial sector equities.

Kasapreko completed the list of gainers, recording a 1.1% increase in its share price.

Although only three equities advanced, their gains demonstrated that selected stocks continued to attract buying interest despite the broader market’s uneven performance.

Intravenous Infusions’ near-double-digit appreciation was particularly notable, although the available trading figures alone do not establish the specific factors behind the increase.

Investors will be watching subsequent sessions to determine whether the gains can be sustained or whether the stocks will experience a reversal.

Societe Generale Ghana Leads Decliners

On the losing side, Societe Generale Ghana recorded the steepest decline, shedding 3.76% to close at GH¢4.61 per share.

The decline made the bank the weakest performer among the five equities that ended the session in negative territory.

MTN Ghana, despite dominating trading volume, also recorded a price decline of 0.46%. The movement highlights the difference between high trading activity and positive price performance, as a heavily traded stock can still lose value during a session.

SIC Insurance Company recorded a marginal decline of 0.22%, while Guinness Ghana Breweries slipped by 0.09%.

The contrasting performance of these stocks reflects the uneven direction of trading across the exchange. While some companies attracted sufficient buying interest to push prices higher, others experienced downward pressure.

The limited number of declining equities relative to the 29 stocks traded also indicates that several listed companies finished the session without a change in their quoted prices.

GSE Composite Index Slips Despite Strong Annual Returns

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) ended the session slightly lower, losing 4.18 points, or 0.03%, to close at 14,048.78 points.

The marginal decline extended the index’s negative performance over shorter periods. The GSE-CI recorded a one-week loss of 0.4% and a four-week decline of 0.66%.

Despite these setbacks, the benchmark index maintained a substantial year-to-date gain of 60.19%, indicating that the market has delivered significant appreciation over the course of 2026.

The latest decline therefore represents a modest setback against the index’s broader annual performance, rather than a reversal of its accumulated gains.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) moved in the opposite direction, rising by 0.37% to close at 7,385.66 points.

However, the financial stocks benchmark remained down 0.62% over one week and 2.24% over four weeks. Its year-to-date gain stood at 58.93%.

The divergent movements between the two indices underline the different performance patterns emerging across the market, with financial stocks recording a daily improvement while the broader benchmark edged lower.

Investors Face a Market of Contrasting Signals

The latest trading session presents investors with a combination of encouraging and cautionary indicators.

The 761% surge in trading volume points to heightened market activity, while the gains recorded by Intravenous Infusions, GCB Bank and Kasapreko demonstrate that opportunities remain available in individual equities.

Nevertheless, the limited number of gainers, the declines recorded by five stocks and the slight drop in the GSE Composite Index reveal that increased activity has yet to produce a broad-based advance in share prices.

With market capitalisation at GH¢264.9 billion and both major indices retaining gains of more than 58% year to date, the exchange continues to reflect substantial annual appreciation despite recent short-term weaknesses.

The next trading sessions will be important in determining whether the surge in activity develops into more widespread price gains or remains concentrated in a small number of heavily traded stocks.

For investors, monitoring individual company performance, trading volumes and index movements will remain essential as the Ghana Stock Exchange navigates the competing forces shaping its daily performance.
