Lionsgate’s latest entry in the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise is generating fresh excitement just weeks before its wide release. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to open in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026, following a London premiere on October 28.
Directed by longtime franchise helmer Francis Lawrence, the film adapts Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel of the same name. It serves as both a sequel to 2023’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and a prequel to the original 2012 film.
The story is set 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s first Games, focusing on the 50th Hunger Games known as the Second Quarter Quell. In this special edition, each of Panem’s districts must send twice the usual number of tributes, resulting in 48 competitors fighting to the death in a televised spectacle designed by the Capitol.
At the center is 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12, portrayed by Australian actor Joseph Zada in a breakout leading role. Haymitch, who would later become the cynical mentor played by Woody Harrelson in the original trilogy, is reaped on his birthday and must navigate the brutal arena while grappling with personal losses and the seeds of rebellion.
The film explores how the trauma of these Games shapes the man fans later meet, emphasizing themes of resistance, survival, and the human cost of the Capitol’s control.
Casts for the Movie
The ensemble cast is stacked with both rising talent and established stars. Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s love interest. Mckenna Grace portrays Maysilee Donner, a fellow District 12 tribute and key ally. Jesse Plemons takes on a younger Plutarch Heavensbee, while Ralph Fiennes steps in as President Coriolanus Snow.
Elle Fanning appears as a younger Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as the flamboyant host Caesar Flickerman, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, and Glenn Close as the sharp-tongued District 12 escort Drusilla Sickle. Additional supporting roles fill out the expanded field of tributes and Capitol figures.
Adding significant nostalgia value, original stars Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark), and Woody Harrelson (older Haymitch) return for the project. Lawrence recently confirmed her involvement in interviews, describing the reunion with Hutcherson and Harrelson and much of the longtime crew as “unbelievable,” “crazy,” and deeply emotional. Their appearances are expected in framing or epilogue sequences that connect the prequel to the later events of the original saga.

Lawrence, who has directed every Hunger Games film except the 2012 original, brings continuity and expertise to the production. The screenplay is by Billy Ray (who wrote the first film) and Michael Lesslie. Produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson under Color Force, the movie carries a reported budget in the $170–200 million range and runs approximately 158 minutes.
Public Reaction
Early reactions from the London premiere have been positive, with some critics calling it a strong, emotionally resonant addition that breathes new life into the series and praising Zada’s performance as young Haymitch.
Box office tracking suggests a robust opening, with projections starting at $60 million or higher domestically over the Thanksgiving weekend frame potentially positioning it as a major holiday draw. The original Hunger Games films were massive commercial successes that turned Jennifer Lawrence into a global star and established the series as a defining young-adult dystopian franchise.
The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes revived interest in 2023, and Sunrise on the Reaping arrives with the added advantage of a bestselling source novel that sold millions of copies upon its 2025 release.
Marketing has been aggressive, featuring trailers that showcase the lush yet deadly arena, character introductions, and the high stakes of the doubled tributes. Official posters lean into iconic imagery of Panem’s landscapes and the Cornucopia, while social media campaigns keep the conversation alive.
The film is rated PG-13 for strong violence, bloody images, disturbing material, some smoking, and teen drinking.

As theaters prepare for the November 20 rollout, Sunrise on the Reaping offers both longtime fans a deeper look at a beloved character’s origins and newcomers an accessible entry into the world of Panem.
With its blend of action, political intrigue, and character-driven drama under Francis Lawrence’s direction, the film aims to expand the franchise’s legacy while delivering the spectacle audiences expect. Tickets are already on sale, and early buzz indicates the odds may once again favor a strong performance at the box office.
