Victor Wembanyama delivered one of the most extraordinary individual performances of the NBA season on Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 52 points to inspire the San Antonio Spurs to a dramatic 112-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.
The 22-year-old French centre also collected 24 rebounds and recorded eight blocks in a remarkable display that underlined his growing influence at both ends of the court.
Wembanyama sealed the contest by converting a decisive free throw with 24.2 seconds remaining after Dallas had fought back from a significant deficit to level the scores. The Mavericks subsequently had an opportunity to snatch victory, but Kyrie Irving missed a contested jumper with three seconds left.
His performance placed him in an exclusive historical category, becoming only the second player since blocks became an official NBA statistic in 1973-74 to register at least 50 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a single game. Bob McAdoo previously achieved the feat in February 1974.
Wembanyama entered the contest having previously recorded a career-best 50 points in 2024, but surpassed that mark with an outstanding offensive performance against Dallas.
He was particularly influential before the interval, recording 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks to help San Antonio establish a 68-51 advantage at half-time.

The Mavericks, however, refused to surrender, gradually reducing the deficit before taking the lead during a competitive fourth quarter.
Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 29 points, while Naji Marshall contributed 22 and P.J. Washington added 21. Cooper Flagg also finished with 19 points as the Mavericks pushed their opponents to the final possession.
Despite the late resistance, San Antonio held on to secure its sixth consecutive victory and improve its season record to 6-2.
Wembanyama, who had been struggling with illness in recent weeks, admitted that he felt considerably better physically during the encounter.
“I haven’t been feeling great lately. I’ve been sick for a while. Today I felt like I got my legs back, so it should be more like this more often.”

Philadelphia Strengthen Position at the Top
Elsewhere, the Philadelphia 76ers maintained their impressive start to the campaign with a 112-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons in an Eastern Conference encounter.
Jaylen Brown produced a season-best 30 points, while Joel Embiid contributed 26 points and 15 rebounds to lead Philadelphia’s offensive effort.
LeBron James also delivered an all-round performance, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the 76ers improved to 8-1, securing the best record in the league.

Philadelphia survived a determined comeback from Detroit, who had reduced a 17-point deficit to six in the closing stages.
Brown proved instrumental in preserving the advantage, blocking a three-point attempt from Cade Cunningham with 37 seconds remaining when the Pistons threatened to move within three points.
Cunningham finished with 26 points and 11 assists, while Duncan Robinson added 27 for Detroit, who dropped to 6-2.
Despite the impressive start, James urged his teammates to remain focused on their immediate objectives rather than getting carried away with championship expectations. “It’s too early to be talking about the Finals and things of that nature,” he said. “We’ll just continue to buy into what we want to do. We got a good team.”
Doncic and Knicks Deliver Impressive Performances
In Sacramento, Luka Doncic continued his remarkable scoring form, producing 40 points to guide the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-103 victory over the Kings.
The Slovenian also recorded nine rebounds and seven assists, extending his streak to three consecutive games with at least 40 points.

He has now accumulated 308 points across his first eight appearances of the campaign, becoming the first player to surpass 300 points in his opening eight games of a season since Michael Jordan recorded 303 during the 1988-89 campaign.
Only Wilt Chamberlain has registered a higher scoring total across his first eight games of a season, having achieved the feat three times.
The encounter also witnessed an unusual incident involving a spectator who threw the ball towards official Chelisa Painter after it went out of play. The ball struck the referee, prompting security personnel to intervene and remove the fan from the arena.
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks produced their most emphatic victory of the campaign, thrashing the Chicago Bulls 135-105 to improve their record to 4-4.
Jalen Brunson spearheaded the defending champions with 33 points, while OG Anunoby contributed 18 and Karl-Anthony Towns added 17 points and 12 rebounds.
New York established its dominance early, opening up a 43-21 advantage in the first quarter before extending the margin to 84-52 at half-time.
The Knicks eventually stretched their lead to 44 points in the third quarter, securing a convincing victory as Chicago suffered its sixth consecutive defeat.
