Member of Parliament for Bunkpurugu, Bandim Abednego Azumah, has assured the public that security agencies are on high alert in the Municipality following the announcement of movement of suspicious persons in the constituency.

Commenting on the Ministry of National Security’s identification of the movement of suspicious persons in Bunkprungu, Mr Azumah revealed that this has brought tension in his constituency and surrounding areas following the threat of a terrorist attack.

Explaining why there is tension in the vicinity, the Bunkprugu MP intimated that the tensions stems from the circulating videos of the attacks that took place and what these terrorists did in Togo. According to him, since the constituency is that closer to the border, if the inhabitants hear that these dangerous persons are getting closer, they will be concerned.

“So there is some tension. But of course, the security agencies are also up and doing. Just this afternoon, I had a call from the commanders on the ground, both the Police, Immigration and National Security asking me to assist them in propagating or educating our people.”

Honorable Bandim Azumah stated that he was made aware of the suspicious entry earlier because he is a very important stakeholder as far as development and security of the constituency is concerned. He added that he was one of the first to be consulted even before the statement was issued by the National Security so, it did not come as a surprise to him even as shocking as it was to many people.

“Why do I say so? Because, we, my constituency, is a border town to Togo, we share borders to our neighboring country Togo and recently we all heard about the happenings in Togo when the Jihadists invaded the community and killed even some military in that country.

“So as a border town, I am not surprised that may be these people have extended their activities trying to enter into our country Ghana using the North East border with Togo, so I am not surprised at all. What we only need to do is to tighten up our security and I am sure working with the security operatives on the ground, they are very much prepared to ensure that those characters are arrested if they ever enter into the constituency.”

Media education programmes ongoing

Honorable Bandim Azumah disclosed that he has sponsored some main media and social media education programmes which is currently ongoing and intends to, after the first one, repeat it almost every two or three hours, so that the people will understand what their responsibilities are in the issue at hand.

“Their attention will also be moved so that they don’t live in fear all the time. But they have to be watchful and that is why the education is very important.”

This came after the Ministry of National Security announced the movement of suspicious persons on the hills of Bunkprungu-Nankpanduri District in the North-East Region.

Though the Ministry stated that similar intelligence was gathered at Garu in the Upper East Region, the activities of these suspicious persons are not known yet. The persons were said to be aboard motorbikes, dressed in apparel covering their faces and seen heading towards the mountainous areas in the Garu District.
