The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Cisco, has successfully completed the “Boosting Digital Skills through Digital Transformation Centres” initiative.

This project, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), aimed to bridge the digital divide in Ghana, particularly focusing on underserved and unserved communities.

Launched three years ago, the initiative initially set a target to train 14,200 citizens. However, it has exceeded expectations, empowering 22,192 Ghanaians with essential digital skills.

The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful (MP), officially closed the initiative in a ceremony held in Kumasi, where she praised the project’s achievements and its role in fostering inclusive growth.

“This initiative has not only met but surpassed its targets, providing thousands of Ghanaians with the skills they need to thrive in a digital world. Our collaboration with ITU, Cisco, and NORAD has proven to be a successful model for digital empowerment.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful highlighted the project’s significance in bridging the digital divide and equipping individuals with the necessary skills to participate in the digital economy.

A key aspect of the project’s success was its sustainable design. Utilizing GIFEC’s Community ICT Centers (CICs) spread across the country, some of which were reequipped with new equipment and renovated, the training was delivered in accessible locations.

This approach ensured that the benefits of the project would continue even after its official conclusion. “Usually when donor-funded projects end, that is the end of the project because there is no more money to run the project. But this digital transformation center project is something that we are very keen to see institutionalized,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasized.

Dedication and Efficient Execution of the Project

The minister commended GIFEC for its dedication and efficient execution of the project, noting that the enhanced digital skills among citizens would significantly contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.

“The success of this initiative underscores our commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian, regardless of their location, has access to the tools and knowledge necessary to participate fully in the digital economy.

“After the training ends, these centers are still there. And even before this training ends within their catchment area, some have gone beyond what was expected of them, have set up more coding clubs, and have trained more people to benefit from the programme.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful

Representatives from ITU, Cisco, and NORAD praised the collaboration and expressed their commitment to continuing support for digital literacy programs in Ghana. They acknowledged the significant impact this initiative has had in transforming lives and fostering a digitally inclusive society.

For many beneficiaries, the training has been a game-changer. One participant expressed deep appreciation for the project, urging for its integration into the basic school curriculum. “I want to appreciate the team that initiated this IT project. I shouldn’t be 40 before I can communicate via email, and it has broadened my knowledge,” he said.

The success of GIFEC’s digital skills initiative highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing digital literacy challenges. By surpassing its targets and reaching over 22,000 Ghanaians, the project has set a precedent for future digital empowerment initiatives. As Ghana continues to advance in the digital age, such programs are crucial in ensuring that no one is left behind, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

The GIFEC initiative is a true reflection of what can be achieved through effective partnerships and a commitment to sustainable development. With ongoing support from local and international partners, the future of digital literacy in Ghana looks promising, paving the way for a more digitally empowered population.
