Haruna Fires Up MoMo Agents: ‘You Are the Chief Efficiency Officers of Your Communities

The Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney LTD, Shaibu Haruna, has delivered a powerful message to Mobile Money Agents across the country, urging them to see themselves as more than just service providers.

Speaking at the Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Ghana (MoMAG) Capacity Building Workshop held at the University of Ghana Business School, Mr Haruna called agents “Chief Efficiency Officers,” the trusted leaders whose daily actions influence lives, shape decisions, and sustain the entire digital financial ecosystem.

Addressing over 200 mobile money agents drawn from various regions, Mr Haruna emphasized that their work sits at the very heart of Ghana’s digital financial inclusion agenda. He noted that agents are not merely conducting transactions or facilitating withdrawals and deposits. Instead, they are “enabling lives and livelihoods,” providing essential financial services that help individuals and businesses survive and flourish.

According to him, Mobile Money Agents are key community figures who hold a unique form of trust. “You are community leaders, trusted with people’s hard-earned money, and the information you share shapes decisions and confidence in our ecosystem,” he stated. This trust, he stressed, must be protected through integrity, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Integrity and Customer Centricity as Cornerstones

Mr Haruna highlighted integrity as a non-negotiable value for agents. He explained that leadership in the mobile money space requires clarity of vision, customer centricity, collaboration, and continuous learning. These values, he said, form the foundation of a sustainable business and a trustworthy ecosystem.

He reminded the participants that their decisions impact thousands of Ghanaians daily. As such, they must uphold high ethical standards to maintain public confidence. “You are not just doing a transactional job. You are enabling lives and livelihoods,” he reiterated, urging them to always put customer interest at the center of their operations.

In his address, Mr Haruna also noted that operational efficiency and effective leadership must coexist for businesses to grow and remain relevant. He described efficiency not only as the swift execution of tasks but also as the ability to provide reliable and secure services to customers.

“Let’s go back to our communities not just as Mobile Money Agents, but as CEOs leading with excellence, precision, and agility. Be the ‘Chief Efficiency Officer’ of your business and a model of trusted leadership.”

His message called for a shift in mindset where agents see themselves as leaders whose influence extends beyond their kiosks into the broader community.

Workshop Focus: Empowering Agents with Modern Skills

The MoMAG Capacity Building Workshop was designed to equip Mobile Money Agents with critical knowledge and tools to navigate the evolving financial landscape. The sessions covered a wide range of topics essential for modern mobile money operations.

Participants were trained on strengthening leadership and operational efficiency, preventing fraud and robbery, understanding the roles of financial partners, preparing for financial security and retirement, enhancing record keeping, and fulfilling tax obligations. These areas, according to organizers, remain crucial for improving the resilience and sustainability of agent businesses.

Resource persons from reputable institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, Bank of Ghana, Deloitte Ghana, and Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) facilitated the sessions. Their expertise provided participants with practical insights and real-world strategies tailored to the challenges faced by Mobile Money Agents.

As part of the event, MoMAG presented two citations to acknowledge significant contributions to the mobile money ecosystem. One citation was awarded to the CEO of MobileMoney LTD, Shaibu Haruna, for his continuous support to the agent network. The other was presented to MTN Ghana in recognition of its commitment and strategic role in empowering Mobile Money Agents across the country.
