Ecobank Ghana and a number of other business organizations have teamed up to light up the major streets and roundabouts in Accra for this Christmas under the aegis of the Greater-Accra Regional Coordinating Council and a number of local legislatures.
Other business groups involved in the project, dubbed “Light Up The City 2021,” include MTN, Unilever, Duraplast, Absa, Access Bank, FBN Bank, The Enterprise Group, Qualiplast, Wire Weaving Industries among others.
This is the third year that Ecobank has participated in this initiative, which seeks to create a bright and lively atmosphere in the city at night throughout the holiday season.
This year’s ‘Light Up The City”, which will benefit Accra and Kumasi, has been stepped up in terms of design and reach, in order to bring some illumination and joy to Ghanaians following a difficult year caused by Covid-19.
Mr. Dan Sackey, the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, lauded the bank’s fortitude in difficulties imposed by the Covid-19 and thanked God for allowing them to go thus far.
“As a leading financial services provider, Ecobank has a lot to be thankful for this year. This is because, in spite of the many devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic globally, we have continued to remain one of the leading and topmost performing banks in Ghana.”

The Managing Director posited thatEcobank Mobile App, the company’s digital banking platform, was the key driving force behind the company’s stellar performance during the past year because the technology allowed it to give workable solutions to the market. He added that Ecobank’s digital banking service is also available on any registered SIM by dialing *770# and it’s frictionless and hassle-free, offering convenience to everybody.
“We do this in the hope that every individual can easily open and operate a bank account, make payments and send remittances to other people, on the back of the numerous self-service solutions deployed by the bank. Everyone can do this without visiting any of the bank’s branches. You are encouraged to do this remotely, especially, in these times of COVID-19, when we are grappling with the new variant, Omicron.”
He encouraged all Ghanaians to “commit to adopting the habit of buying and selling online and, most importantly, making all payments and funds transfers electronically.”
Moreover, Mr. Henry Quartey, Greater-Accra Regional Minister, who has been in the news for his assertive and aggressive approach to prettifying the capital city and ensuring discipline, indicated that the ‘Light Up The City’ Project is a key component of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ campaign to ensure citizens accept responsibility for cleaning, greening, and beautifying their surroundings.
Mr. Quartey explained that while Ghanaians are now enjoying a grace period, the by-law supporting the ‘Clean Your Frontage’ project will take effect on January 1, 2022, and anyone found guilty will face the full wrath of the law.
The same by-law, according to the Regional Minister, would ensure that all automated tricycles (commonly known as Aboboyaa) are limited to specific communities based on the number plates they carry and that anyone discovered operating outside of their assigned area of operation will be penalized.
