A few weeks ago, a call from the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) was made to all artists, music producers, beatmakers, and instrumentalists to submit their works released between January 1st and December 31st, 2021. The VGMA board and the research team, went to work immediately , reviewing over 1000 submissions, to ensure the most qualified made it to the nominees’ list. After weeks of meticulous reviews, the Board has finally completed its work and unveiled the list of nominees for this year’s 23rd Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
The Nominees Announcement happened on Saturday, 19th March 2022, at the Grand Arena. Prior to the grand revealation, however, a few selected categories were announced hourly online via the social media handles of VGMA. The Nominees Announcement which was strictly by invitation was attended by a tall list of VIP guests which comprised the crème de la crème in the entertainment industry and the Ghana media fraternity as a whole. The night also saw performances from some of Ghana’s finest musicians with the evening’s highlight being the grand reveal of the nominees.
Diana Hamilton will lose her title
For the Artist of the Year Category, unfortunately, the current winner who is a Gospel singer, Diana Hamilton, will not be in the run to defend her title as she didn’t earn a nomination in that category. This suggests that, Diana Hamilton will be loosing her title to another artist.
However, last year’s highly tipped artist who could have won the ultimate award, Kidi, has been again nominated in this category. Well, maybe this second time will be his chance to grab the award. Meanwhile, Kidi faces stiff competition from King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie, Black Sherif, and Joe Mettle, who have all had a stellar year topping charts.
Surprise New entries
After showing so much promise and improving her new music career, it seems socialite turned musician, Mona 4 Reall, popularly known as Hajia 4 Reall, has proven to the world that she is on her way to attaining great heights in the music fraternity. She earned a nomination for the ‘Best New Artist category’. She is in contention for the award with five other artists: Sefa, Black Sherif, Scott Evans, Kweku Darlington, and Kwame Yogot.
Stonebwoy makes a comeback
Stonebwoy has made a comeback into the nominees’ list after he was banned for an infamous brawl with Shatta Wale in the 2019 edition of the award show. The duo was banned indefinitely from participating in the VGMAs after the altercation.
In the new list released by the organizers, Stonebwoy made his comeback appearing in the Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year category.
Two of Stonebwoy’s hit songs were nominated for the category – ‘1Gad’ and ‘Greedy Men’. He is going against KiDi (Touch It), Samini (Picture), Larusso (New Gen), and Epixode (Odeshie). Stonebwoy has also been nominated for the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year award. He is up against the 2021 winner Epixode, Samini, and Larusso.
