Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has etched her name into music history by becoming the first female African artist to earn a RIAA Diamond certification in the United States.

The milestone, announced amid fresh RIAA updates on July 16, 2026, recognizes her feature on Future and Drake’s 2022 hit “Wait For U,” which has now surpassed 10 million units in combined sales and streaming equivalents.

The certification elevates the track to Diamond status typically awarded at 10 million units with reports indicating an 11-times Platinum upgrade. This achievement not only underscores Tems’ soaring global influence but also highlights the enduring crossover power of Afrobeats-infused collaborations in the American market.

For an artist who emerged from Lagos’ vibrant music scene, the feat represents a pinnacle of transatlantic success and a beacon for African talent worldwide.

Born Temilade Anna Openiyi on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, Tems’ journey to stardom was anything but conventional. Raised in a musically inclined family, she initially pursued a degree in Economics before working a corporate job.

In 2018, she made the bold decision to quit and fully commit to music, releasing early singles like “Try Me” that showcased her distinctive smoky vocals, introspective lyrics, and genre-blending style rooted in R&B, soul, and Afrobeats.

Her international breakthrough came in 2020 with Wizkid’s “Essence,” a track that became a global summer anthem and earned a Grammy nomination. The song’s success opened doors to high-profile collaborations, including appearances on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, Beyoncé’s Renaissance, and Future’s I Never Liked You.

It was the latter project that produced “Wait For U,” a sultry, melodic rap cut featuring Drake and Tems that topped the Billboard Hot 100 and secured Tems her first Grammy win for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2023.

“Wait For U” resonated deeply with listeners, blending Future’s trap sensibilities with Tems’ ethereal hooks and Drake’s charismatic verses. Its longevity in streaming playlists and radio rotation propelled it past the Diamond threshold years after release, demonstrating the staying power of quality music in the digital age.

Industry experts note that Diamond certifications for featured artists are particularly rare, making Tems’ accomplishment even more remarkable as the first for a female African performer.

This latest honor adds to an impressive list of accolades. Tems has garnered two Grammy Awards overall, including a 2025 win for Best African Music Performance with “Love Me JeJe” from her debut album Born in the Wild.

She has also collected multiple BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2025, she became the first Nigerian artist to win multiple Grammys, further solidifying her status as a pioneer.

Born in the Wild, released in 2024, marked Tems’ arrival as a fully realized solo star. The album explored themes of self-discovery, resilience, and cultural identity, earning critical acclaim and nominations across categories. Her ongoing Born in the Wild Tour has seen sold-out shows across continents, introducing audiences to her live performance prowess characterized by raw emotion and vocal dexterity.

Music analysts point to Tems’ success as part of a broader wave of African artists gaining mainstream traction in the West. Following in the footsteps of collaborators like Wizkid who previously achieved Diamond status with Drake’s “One Dance”-Tems has carved a unique lane that emphasizes authenticity over trends.

Her songwriting credits extend beyond her own projects, contributing to soundtracks like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and various chart-topping releases.

The RIAA Diamond certification carries significant cultural weight. In an industry where certifications translate to both financial rewards and prestige, it validates Tems’ impact on streaming metrics dominated by platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

For Nigeria’s booming music export economy, her win amplifies national pride and inspires emerging talents navigating similar paths.

Tems has often spoken about the challenges of breaking through as an independent voice from Africa. In interviews, she emphasizes staying true to her roots while embracing global sounds. Her management and RCA Records partnership have helped navigate the complexities of international promotion, from visa hurdles to cultural representation in marketing.

Fans and fellow artists flooded social media with congratulations following the announcement. The milestone arrives at a time when Afrobeats and Afrobeats-adjacent sounds continue to dominate global charts, with artists like Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema also achieving notable international feats. Tems stands out, however, for her consistent female perspective and genre-defying artistry.

Looking ahead, expectations are high for Tems’ next chapter. With a dedicated fanbase, expanding catalog, and proven commercial viability, she is positioned for even greater heights potentially headlining major festivals, launching new projects, or expanding into production and mentorship roles for upcoming African acts.

This Diamond certification is more than a numbers game; it symbolizes the erosion of barriers that once limited non-Western artists. Tems has not only sold millions of units but also shifted perceptions about what global superstardom looks like in the 2020s.

As she continues to evolve, her story serves as a powerful narrative of perseverance, talent, and cultural export from the African continent.

In celebrating Tems’ achievement, the music world acknowledges a new era where African voices command Diamond-level respect on the world stage.
