Chidimma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, has opened up about her decision to delete her Twitter account due to the backlash she faced amidst the controversy surrounding her nationality and her Miss Universe Nigeria victory.

The Nigerian-South African beauty queen revealed that the decision to leave Twitter was driven by the overwhelming and often negative feedback she received.

“I’m not on Twitter,” Adetshina confessed.

She highlighted how deleting the app came as a form of solace for her because it became too toxic for her mental health.

“I had to delete it because I felt like it was too much for me. I’m a comment reader so I read each and every comment; that’s the thing. So for me, I could spend 80% of my day reading comments.

“I’d read the comments and all and it became toxic for me. I use Instagram but I did limit my comment section one time.”

The beauty queen also acknowledged the support she receives from fans but also noted the potential risks associated with supporting her.

“Sometimes there are people in the comment section saying, ‘I really like you but I don’t want to put my feelings out there,’ and it’s valid because when people support me, they get dragged. I don’t want people to go through something like that to support me.”

This comes after Chidimma’s withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant following allegations by the South African Home Office of a prima facie case of fraud and identity theft by her mother.

At the time, she also faced severe backlash from South Africans when she was announced as a contestant for the Miss South Africa contest. After her withdrawal, the Silverbird Group, which organized the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, extended an invitation to Chidimma, and she accepted and subsequently won.

She also faced some backlash after winning, as some deemed her victory as one given to her out of pity.

Chidimma responded by making it clear that she worked hard to emerge as the winner of the pageant.

The newly-crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, finally broke her silence, slamming the explosive allegations of identity theft levied against her by South Africa’s government.

Earlier reports detailed how Chidimma found herself at the center of a firestorm of controversy in South Africa, where she had initially been announced as a contestant for Miss South Africa. The backlash was swift, as accusations surfaced, casting a shadow over her pageant journey.

Despite her deep connection to South Africa, the weight of these accusations forced Chidimma to make a tough decision. She bowed out of the Miss South Africa pageant, gracefully accepting an offer to join the Miss Universe Nigeria competition instead.

The 23-year-old beauty queen came out swinging, fiercely denying any involvement in the identity theft allegations.

“I did not steal anyone’s identity. I’m just waiting for the conclusion of the case and the whole matter. Then moving forward I will know exactly what to say because I feel right now if I say something and another thing comes out tomorrow. I’m just avoiding all those two things contradicting each other.

“I really avoided the questions because it is a legal matter and I don’t have all the facts about the matter, but what I can say is that I was not running away from any of that. I was just running because I knew I had a dream that I wanted to fulfill. I’m not fully aware of the matter. But what I can speak on is that I know I did not steal anyone’s identity.”
