In a pointed critique of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership, Hon. Alhassan Suhuyini, MP-elect for Tamale North Constituency, described the President’s administration as one of the worst in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Hon. Suhuyini emphasized that the governance style of the President will serve as a lesson on misgovernance. The menace of corruption, media freedom, these elements he stated, have eroded the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian people in the Akufo Addo government.
Reflecting on the broader implications of President Akufo-Addo’s governance, Suhuyini remarked;
“President Akufo-Addo will go down in history as one of the worst that we have ever had in the Fourth Republic. The deputy minority leader, Hon. Armah Kofi Boah, couldn’t have put it any better when he said that this government will remain in history as a way not to govern. It will become a lesson.
“Few days after Ghanaians returned a very embarrassing verdict on his governance, with election results we have never seen in the Fourth Republic, he gathered his men and women to give themselves awards. Not for serving us well. If I were in his shoes, I would have thought twice about that awards ceremony.”

He argued that such actions demonstrated the President’s insensitivity to the sentiments of the populace.
“Even if past presidents have used it to award their ministers, I would have thought carefully about the nature that event should take after such a shameful, embarrassing verdict.”

Highlighting the decline in press freedom under the current administration, Hon. Suhuyini noted that President Akufo-Addo’s actions contradict his earlier advocacy for media liberties.
“The President championed the passage of the law that prescribed criminal libel so that we could enjoy media freedoms. But under his presidency, we have performed worse as a country in terms of press freedom. That’s in the freedom index.
“If I were a member of the NPP, having watched how Nana Akufo-Addo has treated the media as President, I would be shy to make reference to the fact that he prescribed criminal libel.”

The Fight Against Corruption, A Hollow Record
Addressing the President’s claims on corruption, Hon. Suhuyini criticized Akufo-Addo’s administration for failing to make meaningful progress despite creating the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
“If I were him, I would have stayed clear of the subject of corruption. Look at the very feeble remarks he made about the passage of a law that created the Special Prosecutor’s Office. What is the record there?
“The first person he appointed to that office came out and told us that he has tasted NPP corruption and NDC corruption, and he thinks Nana Akufo-Addo is the mother serpent of corruption.”

Hon. Suhuyini also criticized the performance of the current Special Prosecutor, noting that his tenure began with a lamentation about corruption under the current regime.
“The second appointee, who is still in office, had to sing a dirge. And yet this man is shameless and will come and tell us that the creation of that office is his record in fighting corruption.”

In his concluding remarks, Suhuyini reiterated that President Akufo-Addo’s governance has left an indelible mark of failure and mismanagement. He expressed hope that future administrations would learn from the mistakes of the current regime to better serve the people of Ghana. He reiterated;
“Nana Akufo-Addo’s government will remain a lesson in misgovernance. It will teach us how not to govern, how not to treat the media, and how not to handle corruption.”

The Tamale North MP-elect’s critique reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current government’s handling of critical national issues, particularly corruption and press freedom, and underscores the need for transformative leadership in Ghana’s political landscape.
