Assin Praso has been the target of gunfire during the Tuesday, June 27 by-election in the Assin North constituency.
Following the claimed attack on a person, an increasing number of police officers arrived on the site.
Justin Kodua Frimpong, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserted that the gunshots were fired in the NPP stronghold in an effort to dissuade members of the ruling party from casting ballots.
“Ask yourself how did it happen? Where you stand now, look at the statistics. It is the stronghold of the NPP…how come you are having gunshots here but you are not having gunshots elsewhere? What does it mean? It is an election and people want to intimidate our supporters, people want to scare our supporters from coming out to vote. We are expecting the Police to do better, we don’t want it to get to a point whereby we will be forced to defend ourselves.”

Police Arrest Fake Community Protection Assistant
In Assin North, someone has been detained for pretending to be a community protection assistant.
A shirt identifying the man as a community protection assistant was found on him. However, because he did not provide sufficient answers when questioned by the police, the credibility of his nature was doubted. He was therefore identified as a dishonest community protection assistant and detained by the Assin Bereku Police command.
Following the arrest of the fictitious community protection assistant, reports stated that another person impersonating himself as a soldier while wearing a complete military uniform was also taken into custody.
They are still being held by police pending additional inquiries and judicial actions.
NDC Has No Regrets About Gyakye Quayson
Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), denied claims that his party regretted not supporting Charles Opoku, the NPP candidate, in the Assin North by-elections.
He claims that Charles Opoku only formally joined the NPP after the NDC turned down his request to represent them in the Assin North by-election.
While speaking at one of the voting poll stations for the present by-election, Sammy Gyamfi said the NPP candidate lacks values and cannot be trusted.
“Charles Opoku is a political prostitute. He came to us to tell us to make him our candidate and drop Quayson. But we told him we the NDC don’t work like that, so he should join the queue. I can give you WhatsApp chats with our executives. That is a political prostitute; no principles, no convictions, no track record. You don’t even vote here, and you want to become an MP.”
Sammy Gyamfi
He claimed no one deserves to represent the people of Assin North more than James Gyakye Quayson and that the NDC has no regrets in choosing him as its candidate.
