The Conventions People’s Party appears to suffer a generational battle of internal wrangling among its leadership.

While the party is yet to elect its Presidential Candidate for the 2024 general elections, the National Executive Council of the party has passed a resolution of a vote of no confidence on its national executive officers and called on the various leaders to resign from their respective positions forthwith.

The National Executive Council further indicated that if the various national executive officers refuse to resign, it shall remove them from office.

According to media reports, the passage of the resolution of a vote of no confidence in the national executives by the National Executive Council is a result of a wide expression of dissatisfaction with the performance of the party’s leadership among members of the party across the country.

The National Executive Council thus established a 13-member interim body which included a member of the council of elders, some regional chairmen, regional secretaries, regional organizers, and some representatives of the women and youth wing of the party.

Reacting to the news, Nana Yaa Jantuah, the General Secretary of the party confirmed his resignation from her position and expressed her deepest regret by the decision of the National Executive Council.

Madam Jantuah further disclosed that she would later convey to the public her next line of action in the politics of the country.

“I’m gone. I think I’ve done what I have to do. I’m no longer the General Secretary of the CPP. In due course, I will let everybody know where my political allegiance will be. For now, it’s time for family and friends. I’m going to spend time with my family and friends. For now, I’m going to concentrate on my business. They think some other people can do it better. In political parties, you do not hold on to things. I have done what I have to do these past three years and everybody has seen it. If my people say they do not want me, I can’t force myself on them”.

Meanwhile, the National Chairperson of the party, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah has rejected the decision of the National Executive Council of the party and stressed that she is still in charge as the chairperson of the Convention People’s Party.

She argued strongly that the National Executive Council of the party is not clothed with the power to remove her from her position as the national chairperson of the Convention People’s Party.

Moreover, it is important to note that despite the disagreement by the National Chairperson of the party on the National Executive Council decision, a vote of no confidence by the National Council of the party on its national executives is a significant expression of disapproval and lack of support for the leadership team.

Such an action indicates that the majority of the National Executive Council members, who represent the broader membership of the Convention People’s Party have lost faith in the ability of the national executives to effectively lead and manage the party.

Again, it simply suggests that a significant number of the National Executive Council of the Convention People’s Party believes that the current leadership is not capable or effective in carrying out its responsibilities in achieving the objectives of the party.

Thus, the passage of the vote of no confidence in the national officers of the party could potentially affect the party’s credibility and electoral prospects, particularly ahead of the 2024 general elections.

It is therefore imperative that the leadership of the Convention People’s Party take immediate steps to address its internal wrangling to position itself as a viable political party ahead of the 2024 polls.
