Ten out of sixteen of the regional chairmen of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), have condemned the behaviour of the Council of Elders of the party.
The regional chairmen revealed that they are “shocked” and “dismayed” at the “outrageous behaviour” of the party’s Council of Elders, especially its chairman, Felix Amoah. They indicated that the Council of Elders have “exceeded their power, taken sides and shown bias”.
Contained in a statement signed by the ten, it explained that the behaviour of the Elders is unfortunate, particularly as they are meant to solve problems and not create them.
“Some of us have risen from various positions from the grassroots to our current positions and never have we seen such behaviour of people who are supposed to be experience and well-endowed with knowledge of party structures. We will like to remind the council of elders that they are the creation of the CPP constitution as an organ with a specific role.”

The regional chairmen of the party recounted that on the 21st of April 2022, a legitimate and a quorum formed Central Committee was convened with the involvement of the regional chairmen at the meeting. At the meeting, they indicated that the recent wrangling in the party was discussed. They revealed that after reviewing the numerous petitions, the “writ of summons filed against the party and further threat of court against the party resolved that article 93 clause (e) of the party’s constitution has been breached.
“After interrogating the chairman of the IOC committee, Senior comrade Robert O. Frimpong Manso, who himself is a member of the Council of Elders, admitted both verbally and on records that indeed the IOC erred in declaring the current Chair and Leader, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma, the chair and leader. He further showed documents he has officially written to his colleague members of the Council of Elders and the embattled chair and leader.”

Addressing internal wrangling of the party
Subsequently, the regional chairmen revealed that because they believe that the party’s constitution remains supreme, they have resolved unanimously “that the only way to rectify this error is to trigger article 93 clause (F)”. Owing to this, they expressed their surprise that the council of elders who are also a creation of the constitution and appointees of the Central Committee has decided to disrespect the decisions of the Central Committee.
“We want to state without fear or favour that the actions of the council of elders is an unwarranted interference of the duties of the Central Committee and leadership, especially the legitimately elected members. Again, we want to state that the actions of the Council of Elders is in contradiction of the CPP constitution which is supreme.”

Without mincing words, the ten regional chairmen disclosed that a committee has been tasked to constitute a team to plan a re-run of the chairmanship position between Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma and Hajia Hamdatu Haruna Ibrahim. They further advised Nana Frimpomaa to “respectfully step aside till the said rerun is genuinely conducted”.
“We hope the council of elders who are abreast with the CPP’s constitution and knows the powers allocated to the Central Committee will once and for all, respect the decisions of the Central Committee and urge and advise all parties to do same.”
