Dr. Afriyie Akoto Confident Of NPP Breaking The ‘8’

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

The flag bearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has said that he is very optimistic that the New Patriotic Party will win the 2024 General Elections.

In a media interview on Thursday night, October 12 2023, the former Member of Parliament for Kwadaso in the Ashanti Region indicated that the New Patriotic Party will win the 2024 General Elections regardless of who the party elect as its flagbearer on November 4.

According to the flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party, the Ghanaian media has also not been fair in terms of its reportage on the achievements of the New Patriotic Party administration.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto also noted that the New Patriotic Party administration under its first term undertook major flagship projects and developmental initiatives which the media did not report on.

“The media has not been fair to the NPP government in particular. The media could do far better in propagating the successes of the NPP. In our first term, we did extremely well and the people of Ghana should have patted us on the back rather than voting us out. I’m confident the NPP will break the 8. In our first term of government, Ghana was the star of Africa”

Dr. Afriyie further recounted the challenges the New Patriotic Party administration under President Akuffo-Addo has faced particularly under its second term as what has derailed the gains it made under its first term.

“The 8 years that I was in opposition in Parliament there was no Covid. Even the UK economy look at what is happening there”.

Dr Afryie Akoto Bemoans Of NPP Performance In 2020 General Elections

Moreover, Dr. Akoto expressed his disappointment at how despite the party’s sterling performance in its first term the party’s votes in the presidential result declined in the 2020 election in relation to its performance in the 2016 election.

According to the flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, his decision to lead the party as its presidential candidate for the 2024 General Election was a result of the performance of the party in the 2020 General elections.

He believes the party did not perform very well in the 2020 General Election despite its achievement in office.

“The first term of the Akufo-Addo government we did extremely well and if after that term we go to the people of Ghana to renew our mandate and they nearly sacked us then you have to face the reality that there is something wrong. Why is it that we’d done so well but the people of Ghana were prepared to let us go? As we speak the Parliament of Ghana we have 137 on our side and 137 on the other side, the first time there’s been a tie in Parliament under the Fourth Republic”.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

Dr. Afriyie Akoto emphasized that the people of Ghana should have rewarded the New Patriotic Party in the 2020 General Election based on the government sterling achievements.

“I’m saying that in our first term, we did extremely well and the people of Ghana should have parted us on our back rather than say we are going to sack you. Before then you look at the machinery we are using for our campaign the NPP and you examine the condition of the party, and the party is a patient. The party is not in a coma but the party is not well. The party is on a hospital bed. I think my diagnosis that led us to nearly lose the election was quite right”.
