The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Madam Nana Yaa Jantuah has called for an inclusivity in governance and the need for the restoration of Ghana’s history.

Her commentary touched on the recent ascension of Professor Naana Jane Opopku- Agyemang as Vice President, the symbolic value of inclusivity in governance, and a call for the restoration of Republic Day.

Nana Jantuah expressed her admiration for the recent inauguration, particularly congratulating “Her Excellency, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Nana” for breaking barriers as a woman in high office. She acknowledged;

“What you go through as a woman, It’s not easy. She has broken the ceiling and now gives way for other women to follow. I want to see the day that we would have a female president holding the sword of authority in this country. It’s a day I want to see.”

Jantuah was impressed by the unity and orderliness during the inauguration ceremony. She emphasized;

“The setting was beautiful. Everything was nice. The colors were Ghana’s flag, and Ghana was united. There was a lot of orderliness.”

“I was more enthused with the way he had a personal relationship with all of them. Either he would hug you, [and] from the French-speaking countries, kissed their cheeks. That is how they greet in the French- Speaking Countries. And he [ President Mahama] had a word from each one of them.”

“The smile of the Chief Justice was interesting. It was the first time I saw the Chief Justice smile into the face of His Excellency.”

She recounted that during the Pentecost convention, the Chief Justice’s expression was quite different. But today, she [Chief Justice ] smiled broadly at His Excellency John Dramani Mahama even more excited than Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku. This to her is a signal that it’s a new dawn.

Addressing concerns about governance under President John Dramani Mahama, Nana Jantuah emphasized the President’s commitment to inclusivity. She reaffirmed;

“I want to believe His Excellency John Dramani Mahama would include most people outside his government. Because he started with the word inclusivity and ended with the word inclusivity.”

Additionally, Nana Jantuah send her congratulations to Hon. Julius Debrah on his appointment as Chief of Staff, describing him as “a very great man, a very wonderful person, and a very efficient person.” She expressed admiration for his capabilities, emphasizing the importance of his role in the government.

Furthermore, Nana Jantuah passionately called for the reinstatement of Republic Day by the Mahama administration, emphasizing its historical significance.

“The 1st of July is the day that we got independence proper. It is not the 6th of March. That is the day we became a republic.”

“Nana Addo and his cohorts didn’t like Kwame Nkrumah, they decided to change the trajectory of history and made the 4th of August a Constitution day.”

“We beg him [His Excellency] to restore that day. For nothing at all, for the honor of his father, E. A Mahama, who was part of the people who made sure that we got this Republic.”

She questioned the mechanisms behind this assertion, stating, “Nobody really found out what mechanism they were going to use to bring Dumsor back?”

Nana Jantuah stressed the importance of the NDC monitoring transactions related to crude oil, urging transparency and accountability.

Nana Jantuah discussed the challenges of governance transitions, warning about potential traps set by the previous administration.

Drawing from her experience in the energy sector, Nana Jantuah highlighted the complexity of interpreting utility reports.

“Sometimes the utilities will bring you reports that if you don’t have the expertise to unravel what they are saying, you might not know what exactly is in there.”

Nana Jantuah identified systemic problems in the energy sector, advocating for a revised tariff structure to alleviate the burden on the government. She argued;

“We should find a tariff structure to cater for fuel as [incurred] in the tariff. It might shore the tariff up but there should be ways. We should sit round the table and think through how we can remove that burden from the shoulder of government.”

She recommended immediate action to uncap the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) to stabilize the sector. He explained;

“His excellency John Dramani Mahama and the team should immediately uncap Esla immediately.”

“I heard that Nigeria has been magnanimous enough to shift the picking to February. Which will give us maybe some leeway.”
