Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Effutu seat in the Central Region, has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the horrific tragedy that took place at Gomoa Okyereko on Tuesday, May 30, and left 16 people dead and 40 injured.
The fatal collision was caused by a head-on collision between a fuel truck with the license plate WR 2063-10 and a Youtong bus with the plate GT 5866-L. The Forty patients were treated at the Trauma and Specialist Centre in Winneba for injuries of varying severity.
The Effutu politician praised the courage and altruism displayed by the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ambulance Service, and the people that assisted in the rescue operations. He also demanded investigations to lessen the frequency and severity of these fatal crashes on the roadways. “Your unwavering dedication and selflessness in the face of adversity reflect the finest qualities of service and bravery,” he remarked.
“In light of this tragic event, it is imperative that we come together as a nation and prioritize the safety of our roads. I implore the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, allowing us to identify and enforce measures that will prevent similar incidents in the future. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding road safety, implementing necessary precautions, and fostering a culture of responsible driving.”

Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin also asked road users to exercise caution in order to prevent such collisions from becoming commonplace.
“As we reflect upon this unfortunate incident, I urge all motorists and road users to exercise utmost caution, abide by traffic regulations, and embrace their responsibility to protect their lives and the lives of others. Each life affected by such crashes serves as a poignant reminder of our collective duty to create an environment where tragedies of this nature become a relic of the past.”

My heart is heavy
Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, expressed his sadness over the accident that claimed 16 lives on May 30 at Gomoa Okyereko.
He communicated how heavy his heart is, upon hearing such devastating news.
“It is with a profound sense of sorrow and heartfelt sympathy that I extend my deepest condolences, sympathies, and well wishes to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic accident that took place at Gomoa Okyereko on the Accra-Cape Coast road in the early hours of Tuesday…My heart is heavy as we mourn the loss of sixteen precious West African lives. In this time of immense grief, I extend my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families.”

The Effutu politician prayed that the souls of the accident victims would rest in eternal peace and that they would find comfort and strength in their loved ones’ cherished memories. He argued that the loved ones of the deceased should be aware that they are not suffering alone at this difficult time.
He also wished the survivors of the catastrophe a quick recovery and hoped for the best for them.
“To the brave individuals who survived this harrowing incident and are currently undergoing treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, please accept my sympathies and well wishes for a speedy recovery. Your resilience and courage inspire us all.”
