The newly appointed Acting Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku has expressed her gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the trust and confidence reposed in her.

In an appreciation statement following her appointment, she pledged to discharge her duties with excellence, integrity, and commitment, aligning with the broader agenda of #ResettingGhana and the vision of #MahamaThePresident.

In the statement, Obuobia Darko-Opoku described her new role as a call to duty and service, emphasizing her readiness to contribute to the transformation and elevation of Ghana’s aviation industry.

“The Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) is a critical player when it comes to Ghana’s economic and infrastructural development. It is a gateway to our beautiful country and a key trade, tourism, and investment driver”.

She pledged to ensure efficiency, world-class service delivery, and an exceptional passenger experience that aligns with the vision of President Mahama to position Ghana as a leader in aviation on the continent.

“I step into this role fully aware of its immense responsibility, and I am ready, working with my colleagues, to give my utmost to ensure that our airports remain efficient and world-class and offer exceptional passenger and customer experience to our clients”.

A Journey of Public Service and Political Experience

Obuobia Darko-Opoku’s appointment has been met with widespread reactions, particularly from those who have followed her political and professional journey.

She previously contested in the 2016 parliamentary elections as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Weija-Gbawe constituency but lost to Tina Mensah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite the electoral loss, her commitment to public service and nation-building remained evident, earning her significant admiration across political divides.

Notably, veteran media practitioner Kofi Kyei reflected on her political evolution in a heartfelt commentary.

He recounted their interactions during the 2016 elections, emphasizing how Obuobia Darko-Opoku was subjected to intense political scrutiny and smear campaigns.

Nevertheless, he observed her growth into a more composed, respectable, and influential figure in Ghanaian politics.

Kofi Kyei recalled a church encounter with Obuobia Darko-Opoku during the 2016 election campaign, where he candidly informed her of his intent to vote for the then-candidate Akufo-Addo and Tina Mensah but promised to support her in future elections.

He described how the political landscape shifted in Weija-Gbawe in the years following the 2016 elections, noting that had Obuobia Darko-Opoku contested again in 2020, she would have had a strong chance of winning the seat due to widespread disillusionment with the NPP’s performance in the constituency.

“She had morphed into a soft-spoken and calm person. She had become an extremely decent politician and respected person in many quarters. Whenever I met her at events, I would ask and plead with her to come back.

“She would say, ‘You people, I’m done with you, but let’s see.’ I have always worried her wherever I saw her to come back to Weija!”.

Her appointment is seen as a key move in the broader restructuring and strengthening of Ghana’s aviation sector under President Mahama’s leadership.

The Ghana Airport Company Limited is tasked with ensuring seamless airport operations, upgrading facilities, and improving customer service to meet international standards.

President Mahama’s administration has outlined ambitious plans for Ghana’s aviation sector, aiming to enhance airport infrastructure, expand domestic and international flight operations, and ensure improved regulatory oversight.

Obuobia Darko-Opoku’s appointment is expected to support the realization of these goals, especially as the government seeks to leverage the aviation sector for economic transformation.

Her emphasis on teamwork and collaboration underscores her approach to leadership.  By working closely with aviation professionals, government agencies, and industry stakeholders, she aims to implement policies and initiatives that will drive growth in the aviation sector and make Ghana a preferred destination for air travel.

Her commitment to service excellence, integrity, and national development signals a renewed focus on strengthening the country’s aviation industry.
