In a meeting with the heads of Ghana’s security services, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the need for a concerted and continuous effort to maintain peace and stability within the country.
Speaking at the event, which followed his recent inauguration as President of the Republic of Ghana, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their dedication to protecting the nation’s internal and external security.
President Mahama began by thanking the security services for their critical role in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy, particularly during the recent elections.
“We should have held this ceremony on the 7th, immediately after the inauguration. But as you know, we’re overwhelmed by visitors and, some of those who came on 7th left just a few days ago. They enjoyed Ghana so much that they were not in a hurry to leave.
“But I want to thank you for the good work you have done. This last election has cemented our reputation as a leading democracy in Africa. And, a good part of the thanks go to you, the security services who have maintained the peace.”

The President, however, reminded the gathering of ongoing challenges to Ghana’s security, emphasizing that the country cannot afford to let its guard down.
He pointed to internal threats such as chieftaincy disputes and armed robbery, as well as external threats along Ghana’s northern borders. “There should be no vacuum,” he stressed, urging the security agencies to remain vigilant and zealous in maintaining the country’s peace.
President Mahama also outlined steps to strengthen governance structures, including the establishment of the Council of State and service-specific controlling boards, such as the Armed Forces Council and the Prisons Council.
He expressed confidence that these measures would enhance the management and resolution of outstanding issues within the various security services.
“In the meantime, I expect you all to work very closely together, as you’ve been doing, and continue to keep the country safe for all of us,” the President added, emphasizing the importance of unity among the agencies.
Commitment from Security Chiefs
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, spoke on behalf of the heads of security services, pledging their loyalty, professionalism, and dedication to maintaining Ghana’s stability.
“Mr President, we are here to join our voices with the good people of Ghana and the international community to congratulate you on your assumption of office,” General Oppong-Peprah said. He assured the President of the unwavering commitment of the security services to meeting the complex challenges of the country’s security landscape.
“Mr President, I want to assure you that, we are going to continue with even greater zeal to ensure that we maintain the security and stability of this country. We want to assure you of our unflinching support and dedication, as I said, to duty and make sure that we help you to achieve or realize your objective of resetting Ghana”.
