The former National Organizer and current Director General for the National Lottery Authority, Sammi Awuku, has made known his intentions to contest the Akuapem North Constituency seat in the Eastern Region in the party’s parliamentary primaries.

He believes that his candidature, if secured, will increase the voting margins of the constituency in favour of his party. “I am here to take over from my sister and increase the voting margins for this constituency and the NPP”, he said.

The National Lottery Authority boss believes his contest of the sitting New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament, Ama Dokua Asiamah-Agyei, is to increase the votes of the new patriotic party in the Akuapem North constituency in the Eastern Region.

Even though the new patriotic party garnered some 26,656 votes representing 55.33 percent against four other contenders with the incumbent Member of Parliament, Ama Dokua Asiamah-Agyei, in 2020 Sammi Awuku is confident that with his economic rebound local initiative, he could increase the political fortunes of his party in 2024 with his candidature.

The Economic Rebound Local Initiative according to him, is to empower women, artisans, drivers, and tailors in the constituency to expand their businesses through securing loans for them in liaison with MASLOC.

He intends to disburse a total of GHS 839,000.00 to about 850 beneficiaries within the Akuapem North Constituency. This disbursement will serve as a start-up capital to expand their businesses.

“I plan to link up with MASLOC to reach out to more artisans, drivers, tailors and the rest so that we can have a rebound of economic activity. Crime rate will stop, addiction to drug will stop. The core focus is to cushion and support young and old unemployed people in this Constituency. Entrepreneurship has turned countries all over around.”

Sammi Awuku

He further stressed that women are the backbone of many families in the constituency. However, their business are struggling and they need support. He advised that beneficiaries should be prudent with the facility so they can make the best out of the opportunity.

“In this Constituency, a number of them need support to grow their small-scale businesses that is why I initiated this for them. They must make it sustainable by being prudent with it.

Also, the Eastern Regional Women Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Mercy Amo Darkoah, entreated the beneficiary women to make good use of the seed capital.

“Do not use the seed money to buy the latest Kente for Odwira or sit at the drinking bar to chill with your friends. Expand your business, touch a life, you are the lifeline of homes and the society at large.”

NPP Parliamentary Primaries

The New Patriotic Party in its bid to ready itself for the national general elections in 2024 will hold two sets of parliamentary primaries. The first set will be for orphan constituencies and the second will be for constituencies with sitting members of parliament.

Meanwhile, the party has issued a ban on certain categories of people from contesting incumbents; specifically, national, regional and constituency executives as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Sammi Awuku who is currently the Director General of the National Lottery Authority will not be affected as he indicates the decision of the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Akuapem North Constituency’s decision to contest in a different constituency in the coming primaries.

Sammi Awuku, who is also affectionately called Capo within the party’s circles is revered for his political prowess. Apart from being the Director General of the National Lottery Authority, he was also recently appointed as the head of the Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team.

A role many have once again commended him at his delivery of results.
