If failure was punishable by death, the United Nations would have been dead some years ago. It is the biggest failure of all organizations that need to be shamed for activities. It is very surprising to name Russia on their so called List of Shame, and ignore Israel, US, UK, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
The atrocities Australia committed, in their participation in the U.S- led invasion in Afghanistan and Iraq remains unresolved, not to mention US and UK, who jointly, are believed to have caused thousands of deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Though Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is disgusting, but if Russia is named on the List of Shameful countries, who actions action have resulted in millions of violation of human rights, then US, UK and others should not be sidelined.
It is more annoying for the Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of UN, to admit to Israel’s relentless shelling of Palestinians, and not named Israel on the List of Shame.
In Moscow’s quest to exert dominance over Ukraine, it launched its so called Special Military Operations on his neighbor, in February 2022. After series of military exercises, some few kilometers away the borders of Russia and Ukraine and Belarus and Ukraine in December 2021, the Russian Premier, order his Army in Ukraine.
In the words of Vladimir Putin, the special military operation was meant to “De-nazify” Ukraine, thus elimination of the Nazi leaders in Ukraine. The invasion drew a lot of international condemnations of Russia, sparkling series of UN Security Council resolutions, that demanded Kremlin to halt operations, but these demands felt on death ears.
Aside the resolutions, major players in the world’s economy including members of the global north, began to heap sanctions on Moscow, targeting oligarchs and any essentials Russian trading resources, that could help financed Kremlin’s aggression in Kyiv.
Also, since Russia’s Army and their military arsenals, are ten times that of Ukraine, all the major allies, notably US, UK, NATO, and EU have been aiding Kyiv with military assistance, and it is by these efforts that Ukraine still has the believe of overpowering Russia.
Colossal Failures of The United Nations.
One major objective of the UN, that was trumpeted across the world, after succeeding the League of Nations in 1945, was to prevent another world war, and conflicts that could possibly drag the possibilities of nuclear weapons into use.
The formation of UN was preceded by the ideological war, known as Cold war. The cold war was a proxy war-like fought on a particular country, and spearheaded by the Western nations; notably US, UK, Australia and others, against Communist Russia and his communist partners.
The cold war era provided the Korean War, from 1950 to 1953. This war was one of UN’s major failure as an organization, which was meant to sustain peace in the world. The Korean was the battle between the Northern part of Korean and their Southern part. The war involved US and its major allies and Russia and its fellow communist nations.
Notwithstanding, another major conflict that seemed unresolvable, has been the Israel-Palestine war, dating back from 1948, three years after the formation of UN. This particular conflict is now considered as the longest running conflict in world.
Moreover, the post-soviet era came along with series of conflicts, that little efforts of UN would have prevented bloodshed. The Rwanda genocide in 1994, claimed over 800,000 lives, Serbia-Kosovo war provided over 10,000 deaths and the Srebenica massacre in 1995 resulted in over 8,000 deaths in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Even with these records, resolutions passed on wars, have been less effective. The UN in it’s over 77 years of operation have failed to implement its resolutions to a recurring matter.
Darfur genocide still remained unresolved. The current Sudan impasse has reignited the Darfur ethnic cleansing, which has already claimed the life their governor.
It is therefore sad to note that, the very organization trusted with world peace and stability, has failed in most part of its activities, find the courage to shame a country. If Russia has been listed on the list of Shame, so should the UN include US, UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Israel, whose operations are widely visible in the countries they operated in. As the saying go, he who claims equity must come with clean hands.
