Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been ousted from the party following his decision to run as an independent candidate in Islington North in the upcoming general election.

Mr. Corbyn’s declaration on Friday, May 24 poses a significant challenge for current leader Sir Keir Starmer, who previously barred his predecessor from representing Labour.

This action came after Corbyn asserted that the extent of antisemitism within the party had been “dramatically overstated.”

In response, Sir Keir Starmer reiterated his reasons for blocking the 74-year-old Jeremy Corbyn from standing for Labour, asserting Corbyn’s comment to “tear antisemitism out of our party by the roots.”

Starmer stated, “That was my first solemn promise, and I followed through on that. That is why I decided Jeremy Corbyn would not stand as a Labour candidate at this election.”

Commenting on Corbyn’s decision to run as an independent, he added, “Now, what’s happened with Jeremy standing as an independent, that’s a matter for him.”

Shortly after Corbyn had been notified that his party membership had been revoked, Labour announced the selection of local entrepreneur Praful Nargund to stand against him.

Nargund expressed this readiness to lead as Labour candidate in Islington North.

“It’s an honor to have been chosen as Labour’s candidate for Islington North and I look forward to the campaign ahead. I promise to be a truly local MP, that represents all families and businesses that call this special place their home.”

The contest is set to be one of the most closely watched on election night, with Mr. Corbyn relying on his tireless local campaigning to retain the seat against the odds.

Mr. Corbyn, who has represented Islington North for over 40 years, announced his independent candidacy in an interview with the Islington Tribune, stating he would be “a voice for equality, democracy and peace.”

“I am here to represent the people of Islington North on exactly the same principles that I’ve stood by my whole life: social justice, human rights and peace.”

He vowed to champion “a genuine alternative to the corrupt years of this Tory government,” with a focus on rent controls, public ownership of energy and water, and an ethical foreign policy based on peace and human rights.

Mr. Corbyn, who led Labour from 2015 to 2020, stated, “When I was first elected, I made a promise to stand by my constituents no matter what. In Islington North, we keep our promises.”

However, the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) countered, stating that the party became an unsafe space for Jews under Mr. Corbyn’s leadership.

“He refused to acknowledge the scale of antisemitism in Labour, even when the EHRC found the party guilty of breaking the law.

“The Labour Party we see today is unrecognizable from what it had become under Corbyn, thanks to the leadership of Keir Starmer. Voters in Islington North deserve a Labour MP and Government – we’ll be campaigning to make sure they get one.”

In the last general election in 2019, Mr. Corbyn secured the seat for Labour with over 64 percent of the vote. The Liberal Democrats, who have now named Vikas Aggarwal as their candidate, came in second.

The substantial majority Mr. Corbyn achieved had made Islington North one of the safest seats for Labour in the country.

Labour MP John McDonnell stated that Mr. Corbyn would still enjoy “a lot of very personal support” if he ran as an independent, expressing hope that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would eventually permit his return as a Labour candidate.

There is also speculation that dissatisfaction with Sir Keir’s stance on the war in Gaza could bolster Corbyn’s vote.

However, a group of over 100 local Labour party members opposed to Mr. Corbyn expressed confidence that he doesn’t have the support of party voters.
