The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has elected President Nana Akufo-Addo as its new Chairman.

Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin shared the information on the President’s new appointment in a Facebook post, disclosing that his induction into the chairmanship position took place at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit, which is being held in Niamey, which is the capital of Niger.

“President Akufo-Addo has just been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), at the ongoing 57th ECOWAS Summit, which is being held in Niamey, capital of Niger”.

The president will take over from the Niger President, Mahamadou Issoufou who was elected on June 29, 2019.

This makes him the 35th President to chair ECOWAS since its inception in 1975.

As a mandatory obligation, he would have a year’s mandate within which he would run the affairs of the Regional body.

Collectively, the countries comprise an area of 5,114,162 km2 and in 2015 had an estimated population of over 349 million.
