The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has defended his stance on security personnel being paid monies to influence their voting during the special voters exercise.

Former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama will today, October 7, 2020, file his nomination for the 2020 presidential election.

Posted on his Facebook handle, John Mahama revealed that he had reviewed all his nomination forms and signed the relevant portions.

“Today I reviewed my nomination forms and signed the relevant portions for filing”.

Contrary to some expectation, the NDC flagbearer revealed that General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia will file the nomination in his stead at the Electoral Commission.

“General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia will tomorrow, Wednesday, file the nomination papers at the Electoral Commission on my behalf. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and I want to say a big thank you for supporting our candidature”.

President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday submitted his nomination form along with the Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia and some party stalwarts.

The flagbearer of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly called Osofo Kyiri Abosom and two-time independent presidential candidate, Jacob Osei Yeboah equally filed their nominations.

Currently, 12 political parties and 3 independent aspirants have so far downloaded the nomination forms to contest the 2020 Presidential Election.

The Electoral Commission has expressed its hope of all political parties and independent presidential aspirants filing their nominations in time.

Per the Electoral Commission, presidential and parliamentary aspirants for December 7, 2020, General Election are to file their nominations from Monday, October 5, to Friday, October 9.

Meanwhile, the deputy General Secretary for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor, has discredited President Akufo-Addo’s declaration of confidence in the integrity of the Electoral Commission.

His comments comes on the back of president Akufo-Addo lauding the abilities of the Commission as he filed his nomination forms.

“Not only is the President’s comment duplicitous and hypocritical but also exposes his level of complicity in the kind of misconduct that the Electoral Commission has cooked”.

According to him, the procedures and electoral process has “exposed the level of incompetence and in some cases their [the Electoral Commission’s] level of deliberate confusion of the process in favor of the NPP”.

“This Electoral Commission has lost credibility. People do not have confidence in the electoral process any more. Every step of the way, it has been plagued by irregularities”.

Mr. Otokunor further attributed the current happening to what he purports to be the bad leadership of the EC Chair.

“This Electoral Commission has been the most recalcitrant and the most biased Electoral Commission that we have ever seen in their decision-making.”
