Trump confirms he won’t attend Biden’s inauguration

US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has said he will not be attending President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration later this month.

The outgoing US president tweeted; “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.“

Mr Trump is expected to travel to his Florida resort ahead of the inauguration, according to a source.

They added there have been discussions at the White House about Mr Trump departing Washington before inauguration day.

The President’s announcement came shortly after claiming his supporters would have a “giant voice long into the future”.

Mr Trump wrote on Twitter that the “75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

Mr Trump’s latest tweets come after he finally conceded defeat to Joe Biden in the US election.

The president also said he was “outraged” by the “heinous” attacks, which came as politicians in Congress certified Mr Biden’s victory.

A police officer, Brian Sicknick has been confirmed dead from injuries suffered when supporters of Donald Trump stormed Congress, bringing the number of lives lost in the riot to five.

Mr Sicknick was hurt “while physically engaging with protesters”, according to police.

He later collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

An investigation has been launched into the death of the officer, who joined the US Capitol Police (USCP) in 2008.

His brother Ken Sicknick said in a statement; “My brother Brian was the youngest of three sons born to my parents in South River, NJ.

“Brian, age 42, wanted to be a police officer his entire life. He joined the New Jersey Air National Guard as a means to that end.

“In doing so, he served his country honourably in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Desert Shield, of which my family is very proud.”

US Capitol Police added in a statement that the “entire USCP Department expresses its deepest sympathies to Officer Sicknick’s family and friends on their loss, and mourns the loss of a friend and colleague.”

A motorcade of police vehicles lined up in front of the Capitol building in Washington DC to honour Officer Sicknick, before driving past the Washington Monument.

Four other people also lost their lives during the clashes, including a female Trump supporter who was shot dead by police and three people who died from medical emergencies.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has intimated she is holding discussions about preventing President Trump from ordering a nuclear strike as top Democrats are calling for his immediate removal from office.

Ms Pelosi said she has spoken to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on precautions for preventing Mr Trump from initiating hostilities or ordering a nuclear strike adding that the “unhinged president could not be more dangerous”.

She also said she has still not heard from Vice President Mike Pence about the 25th amendment.
