Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu has expressed surprise over the existence of the Ghana Bar Association due to its “loud silence” on pertinent issues within the country.

Member of parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu.

Bansi Abubakar Abdul Hamid, Spokesman for Madina MP, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has disclosed that the lawmaker has not been served any summons by the court.

According to him, the Director-General of Police Public Relations, ACP Kwesi Ofori, told lies in his announcement of the summons. Mr Hamid believes that there is no evidence to suggest that Mr Sosu has been served with any formal charges.

In reaction to the Police Service announcement that it has formally filed charges against Mr Sosu, for causing damage to public property, among other charges, Mr Hamid revealed that he cannot bring himself to trust the words of ACP Ofori.

“As we speak now, Mr Sosu has not been served with any summons. We are aware that the Speaker has written to the Police to get them to stop any such proceedings. It is very unfortunate that the Police administration at this point will choose to be peddling falsehood. So, we can’t just take the word of ACP for it. He has to show us evidence of how he has served the MP and as we speak, he has not done that. We have not seen any court document that shows that he has been summoned to appear before the court”.

Mr Hamid indicated that although they have heard about the charges brought against Mr Sosu, no summons has been served.

“We are actually disturbed about the gross disrespect the Police continues to show the Speaker and what is even worrying is the deliberate distortion of facts and attempt to deceive the general public about what is happening”.

Police and parliament must work for national development

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has called on parliament and the Ghana Police Service to work for national development, following the charges filed against the Madina MP.

Mr Toobu described the move by the police to drag the Madina legislator to court as one that will be unsuccessful. He explained that the law demands that the Police serves the suit to Francis-Xavier Sosu through the Speaker of Parliament.

“They have the duty to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the Member of Parliament is guilty of the charge. But that notwithstanding, they have to serve him with the court processes. They will have to go through the procedure and serve it on the honourable member though the Speaker. This whole show is an exercise in futility. The Police and Parliament must begin to work together for national development. It is not for competition. They must complement each other’s efforts to build the country”.

Mr Peter Lanchene Toobu

Prior to his comments, the Speaker of Parliament had expressed disappointment over attempts by the Police to disregard his earlier directive and file charges against the Madina MP.

According to the Speaker, the action of the Police is not only a violation of the 1992 Constitution but disingenuous as well. In a similar statement issued on Wednesday, Mr Bagbin observed that the attempt to arrest Mr. Sosu during a church service last Sunday was an insult to Parliament and his powers.
