Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, has rescinded his decision to support the verdict of GES, to interdict the headmaster of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO), following reports that a toilet facility had been converted into a dormitory.

The immediate past Minority Leader after visiting the school and getting detailed information, averred that the initial reports that a toilet facility had been converted into a dormitory, are erroneous. In his opinion, he claimed that if proof was provided to the appropriate established order, it would have been found out that the headmaster and the housemaster, did no wrong to be interdicted.

He further urged the media to be circumspect when reporting on such issues.

“My appeal to the media is to exercise circumspection, in reporting historically accurate facts about Kabral and Gbanzaba dormitories. Much about what has been put out publicly, is not entirely factual and accurate. If these facts were earlier made known to me and any other person in authority, you ought not to ask the headmaster to step aside, when you have the full facts available to you.

“We expect that we treat people serving this country in a manner that is fair and just. I will monitor the outcome of the investigations and the implementation of the committee’s report.”

Haruna Iddrisu

Earlier in a statement, the Member of Parliament expressed his state of unhappiness, concerning the toilet cubicles being converted into accommodation facilities for students at GHANASCO. He described the development as an unfortunate occurrence and therefore, called for further investigations to ascertain the truth of the matter.

Over the weekend, videos of the school, using the toilet cubicles as a sleeping area, went viral and caused a public outrage, which resulted in the Ghana Education Service (GES) indicting the headmaster of the school, Doughlas Haruna Yakubu, who in turn, denied the reports and described it as mischievous and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts.

GNAT Informs GES To Reinstate Headmaster

Moreover, after further investigation, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) asked the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately reinstate the interdicted headmaster of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO).

The Association says the interdiction was without merit, as no investigation had been conducted into the issue at the time. According to GNAT, the move by the GES has affected the confidence of the embattled headmaster, Mr. Doughlas Haruna Yakubu.

GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah, speaking in an interview, lambasted GES for taking such a decision.

“Why should you in a rush, go and issue a statement interdicting the person, putting the person in the public for ridicule? Do you know you have humiliated the head? You have broken his confidence and you don’t handle professionals like that. The matter should have been investigated. GES should do the needful by reinstating the man and let’s move forward, he came to meet the matter, he didn’t create it.”

Thomas Musah

The GES has stated that it is conducting a probe into the issue at hand and has asked both the head and senior housemaster of the school to step aside, for a thorough investigation to be rolled out. GES sent a fact-finding delegation to probe and ascertain the truth or otherwise of the allegation.

Meanwhile, the headmaster, Mr. Doughlas Haruna Yakubu dispelled the video footage depicting students sleeping in toilet cubicles as trumped-up. Mr. Yakubu claimed the school has enough space to accommodate its students and thus, there is no reason for students to be kept in toilet cubicles. In his estimation, the footage was taken with malicious intent to cause public disaffection for the school.
