Dr. George Akuffo Damprae, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has praised the officers sent to Kumawu to oversee the by-elections.

Dr. Dampare was visibly seen traveling through the Kumasi Constituency on Tuesday, May 23, election day, making sure that everything went smoothly and in accordance with the law.

By the time the voting was over, Ernest Yaw Anim of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had easily won.

In order to overcome Kwesi Amankwah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the other two Independent Candidates, he received 15,264 votes.

Kwesi Amankwah of the NDC received 3,723 votes, compared to Kwaku Duah (1)’s 2,478 and the other Kwaku Duah’s meager 62.

Ernest Yaw Anim, the newly elected member of parliament for Kumawu, was congratulated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Following the formal announcement of the results of the by-election held on May 23, 2023, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia urged Ernest Anim to make an everlasting impression in parliament in a social media post.

“Congratulations to Ernest Yaw Anim and Kumawu for this victory. Anim, go and make Kumawu proud and leave an indelible mark in Parliament…Thank You Kumawuman!”

Yammin Alleges NDC Activists Took GHC 50 To Vote For NPP To Win

According to Joseph Yammin, National Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a known NDC member was allegedly given Ghc50 from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), in order to cast a ballot for the NPP’s candidate in the just concluded Kumawu By Election.

He stated this while condemning what he called vote-buying in the elections that were place on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

“A known member of the NDC in Kumawu took Ghc 50 and voted for the NPP. When we confronted him he was bold to tell us that he is not wicked and that since he has taken money from the other side, there is no way he can vote against them.”

Joseph Yammin

He claimed that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) example in the Kumawu elections was detrimental to Ghanaian politics and democracy.

Yammin is of the opinion that in the future, voters would demand money before casting ballots, rather than criticizing the policies and programs required for the nation’s development.

Moreover, seasoned Journalist, Kwesi Pratt made known that some candidates shared cups of rice he called ‘tu gyimi’ to influence the votes of the electorates.

Mr. Pratt found it very amusing that a vote could be bought with what he disclosed as two cups of ‘tu gyimi’ rice.

He held his ground emphasizing that there are videos showing the electorates collecting cups of the rice in exchange for their votes, hence, he wondered why others might be shocked at his comment.

“Even in the North, if you don’t give them maggi cube, it will be very difficult to win elections. We need more by-elections everyday…God damn it!”

Kwesi Pratt

The by-election in Kumawu was made necessary after the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Philip Basoah.
