The Accra Bourse’s Positive Start to the New Year Stalls

A mix session on the local bourse saw NewGold ETF stock and Benso Oil Palm Plantation made massive gains, but unfortunately not enough to lift the general indices from decline.

In the aggregate, 15 GSE listed equities participated in trading, ending with two gainers and just one loser. The two gainers were NewGold ETF (+18.06%) and Benso Oil Palm Plantation (+0.79%). The only equity that lost value on the day was Societe Generale Ghana (-1.67%).

In the Ghanaian stock market, Benso Palm Plantation Plc. (BOPP) experienced a modest gain of GH¢0.11, closing at GH¢14.11, while NewGold (GLD) saw a more substantial increase of GH¢33.80, closing at GH¢221.00. However, Societe Generale Ghana PLC. (SOGEGH) witnessed a slight decline of GH¢0.01, closing at GH¢0.59.

The overall market capitalization also experienced a decrease, falling by GH¢1,370.73 million, and closing the day at GH¢65.88 billion. A total of 85,957 shares were traded across fifteen equities, with a total value of GH¢619,674.40.

Scancom PLC. Emerged as the most actively traded stock, with 54,524 shares valued at GH¢59,431.16, representing 9.59% of the total value traded. Societe Generale Ghana PLC. (SOGEGH) followed closely, trading 18,563 shares valued at GH¢10,955.58, accounting for 1.77% of the total value traded.

Benchmark Indices

Turning to the benchmark indices, the GSE-Composite Index, representing the overall performance of the Ghana Stock Exchange, experienced a minor decline of 0.31 points, closing at 2,510.98 points.

This represents a year-to-date (YTD) return of 2.74%. On the other hand, the GSE Financial Stocks Index recorded a more significant decline of 1.23 points, closing at 1,676.12 points, reflecting a YTD return of -18.34%.

All in all, the Ghana stock market showed mixed performance, with certain stocks experiencing gains while others faced declines. The market capitalization decrease and the decline in the benchmark indices indicate a level of volatility and uncertainty within the market.

Investors will closely monitor these trends and assess the factors influencing the stock market in Ghana.
