NPP Interprets Assin North By-Election As Wake Up Call

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the outcome of the Assin North by-election is a wake-up call that forces the party to analyze its strategy and make reasonable retrospective judgments.

The NPP invited party members to submit their suggestions and opinions to the National Secretariat for evaluation and potential adoption, in a statement signed by Justin Koduah Frimpong, the party’s General Secretary.

“The Party views the outcome of the by-election as a wake-up call, prompting us to evaluate our approach, make rational retrospective assessments, and conduct a thorough analysis. We urge our dedicated party supporters to submit their comments and recommendations to the national secretariat of the party for consideration and possible implementation”, the statement said.

However, the NPP added their congratulations to those of the NDC for winning the by-election and for its parliamentary candidate. The party added that even though it had planned to win back the seat, it respected Assin North’s voters’ choice.

“While we had diligently worked towards reclaiming the Assin North Parliament, seat, we respect the decision and judgment of the people of the Assin North constituency,” the NPP emphasized in its statement.

After the by-election on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Charles Opoku of the NPP received 12,630 votes, or 42.15%, and James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 17,245 votes, or 57.56%. Sefenu Bernice Enyonam, a candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), received only 87 votes, or 0.29% of the total cast.

Assin North Will be Blue Again

As stated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Assin North will likely turn blue once again, sooner rather than later.

Because there are victors and losers in a democracy, he has asked his party’s supporters, the New Patriotic Party, to maintain their composure.

“I urge members of my party, the New Patriotic Party, to keep their heads up, recognising that, in a democracy, there are winners and losers, and that we live to fight another day. We once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again.”

Moreover, he praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for winning the Tuesday by-election in Assin North.

Also, the Electoral Commission and the security agencies were praised by President Akufo-Addo for a job well done. He claimed that after a peaceful election was held in Assin North on Tuesday, Ghana’s democratic credentials were further bolstered.

“I congratulate warmly the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission, again, for a job well-done. The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections; as is the media for providing extensive coverage before, during and after the elections. I congratulate the National Democratic Congress on its victory,” he posted on his Facebook page.

The Supreme Court invalidated the 2020 elections held in the Assin North constituency, which James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress won. This led to the holding of the by-election.
