The Ministry of Health has called for stronger regulation, public education and coordinated action across sectors to prevent lead poisoning and protect children from its harmful effects, as Ghana marked the launch of National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week 2026.

The campaign, held under the theme “From Detection to Prevention,” seeks to promote practical measures to reduce exposure and safeguard public health. Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Health, Chief Director Desmond Boateng described lead poisoning as a serious but preventable threat that requires action beyond the health sector.

“Lead poisoning is a preventable public health threat. We must strengthen regulations, educate communities and eliminate sources of exposure to protect children from lifelong health complications.”

Mr Boateng warned that lead exposure can cause lasting harm, particularly to children, whose brain development, learning and behaviour may be affected. Adults are also vulnerable, with exposure capable of damaging the kidneys and cardiovascular system.

His remarks placed emphasis on prevention, given the wide range of everyday and industrial activities that can introduce lead into people’s environments. The Ministry identified lead-based paint, mining activities, battery recycling, electronic waste and contaminated consumer products as common sources of exposure.

Ministry Outlines Priorities for Preventing Lead Poisoning

Mr Boateng outlined a number of priorities to strengthen Ghana’s response, including educating the public about sources of lead, protecting communities at greater risk and improving the ability of health workers to identify and manage exposure.

He also called for effective enforcement of regulations to control lead at its sources. The approach, as outlined by the Chief Director, places prevention alongside detection and treatment, with institutions expected to address the environmental and consumer-related pathways through which people may come into contact with the toxic metal.

The Ministry’s call also highlights the need for cooperation among agencies responsible for health, environmental protection, product safety and public education. A response led by the health sector alone would not address every source identified during the launch.

UNICEF Calls for National Lead Surveillance System

Deputy Country Representative of UNICEF Ghana, Emmanuelle Collet, called for a coordinated national surveillance system to strengthen the country’s ability to identify and respond to lead exposure.

She urged the establishment of a system that can identify children who have been exposed, trace the sources of contamination and ensure unsafe products are removed from the market.

The proposed surveillance approach would connect information about affected children with investigations into where exposure occurred. It would also support action against products that pose risks to public health, helping authorities move beyond identifying cases to preventing further exposure.

Agencies Join Efforts to Protect Vulnerable Populations

The Ministry of Health is working with Pure Earth, Vital Strategies, the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, the Food and Drugs Authority and the Ghana Health Service to strengthen the national response.

The collaboration is intended to improve public education, surveillance and regulatory enforcement, with particular attention to vulnerable populations, especially children.

The campaign also places responsibility on institutions to ensure that prevention measures reach communities where exposure may occur. Stronger coordination can help connect public health information with action on environmental hazards and potentially unsafe goods.

For families, information about common sources of lead can support safer choices and encourage timely engagement with health services when exposure is suspected. The focus on children reflects the particular concern that harm to their development, learning and behaviour can affect their wellbeing and future opportunities over time.

“Moving from detection to prevention requires a coordinated national effort. Every child deserves a safe environment free from harmful lead exposure, and protecting their future must be a shared responsibility.”

Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Desmond Boateng

The awareness week’s theme, “From Detection to Prevention,” captures the shift the campaign seeks to encourage. Detecting exposure remains important, but reducing the sources of lead and preventing contact with the metal are necessary to protect people from its harmful effects.

The Ministry’s appeal for stronger regulation and public education, together with UNICEF Ghana’s recommendation for coordinated surveillance, places prevention at the centre of the national response. Sustained collaboration among the participating institutions will be important in strengthening monitoring, informing communities and protecting children from avoidable exposure.
