TUC Slams Professor Adei over his Critique of Ghanaian Workers

Professor Stephen Adei

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has launched a scathing criticism against Professor Stephen Adei, following his controversial assertion that Ghanaian workers rank among the least productive globally.

The Trade Union Congress through its Secretary General, Dr Anthony Yaw Baah in a statement did not mince words in condemning Professor Adei’s remarks, describing it as unwarranted attack on Ghanaian workers.

The statement  accused the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Professor Stephen Adei of being on a perceived mission to discredit Ghanaian workers, alleging a pattern of deliberate attacks and a consistent effort to court public disaffection against them.

“You are on a mission to discredit Ghanaian workers at the least opportunity. You have been deliberate and consistent in attacking workers and courting public disaffection for them. The working people of Ghana will not tolerate your attacks any longer”.

The Trade Union Congress further accused Professor Stephen Adei of harboring what it described as  a “morbid hatred” for Ghanaian workers and failing to hide his perceived  disdain for trade unions in the country.

The Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress Dr Yaw Baah  strongly asserted that Professor Stephen Adei’s perceived hatred towards Ghanaian workers and their unions have completely eclipsed his judgment on issues of industrial relations and national development.

Context and History of Labour Issues in Ghana

He particularly criticized Professor Stephen Adei’s alleged ignorance of the context and history surrounding the issues faced by workers and their unions in the country, accusing him of impulsively jumping into conversations without fully understanding the complexities involved.

According to Dr Baah, the claims made by Professor Stephen Adei gainst Ghanaian workers and unions are only figments of his “clouded and biased imaginations”.

Moreover, the Trade Union Congress statement issued by its Secretary General Dr Anthony Yaw Baah expressed bewilderment at Professor Stephen Adei’s motivations behind his perceived negative statements about Ghanaian workers, questioning the intent behind such remarks.

He described Professor Stepehen Adei’s assertion as very untenable, stating that it’s very strange and unfortunate that an academic of his persona could make such statements about the working people of Ghana who are sacrificing so much for the development of the country.

“You should know that being a professor does not entitle you to profess opinions about everything under the sun…We wonder what you want to achieve with such negative statements about Ghanaian workers”

Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, TUC’s General Secretary

In addition, Dr Yaw Baah referenced President Akufo-Addo’s swift action in removing Professor Stephen Adei from the state institutions he was appointed to lead, suggesting a tacit acknowledgement of the inappropriateness of Professor Adei’s comments.

Professor Stephen Adei, the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in recent remarks  purportedly highlighted his research findings, claiming that workers from neighboring Togo demonstrate higher quality work compared to their Ghanaian counterparts.

His assertions has since then sparked widespread debate and condemnation within Ghanaian society, with many rallying behind the TUC’s rebuke and denouncing Adei’s alleged bias and prejudice against Ghanaian workers.
