Power Struggle, Killing Movie Industry

The Ghana movie industry has undergone significant changes and challenges in recent years, and power struggles indeed impact its overall health and sustainability.

The rise of streaming platforms and digital distribution has disrupted the traditional movie distribution model, creating a power struggle between traditional studios and these new players.

Streaming platforms have gained significant influence, challenging the dominance of traditional theaters and studios.

In some cases, conflicts between directors, producers, and studios over creative decisions lead to power struggles. Disagreements over artistic vision, budget, and marketing strategies impact the final product and even result in the cancellation or delay of a film.

Hollywood studios have always competed for box office success and market share. This competition sometimes leads to intense power struggles, with studios vying for the most lucrative projects, talent, and distribution deals.

Negotiations between actors, directors, and studios also become power struggles. High-profile actors and directors often have significant influence over the projects they are involved in, including creative control, financial terms, and overall decision-making.

The movie industry is also affected by power struggles over intellectual property rights. Studios and production companies may fight over ownership, distribution rights, and adaptation rights, leading to legal battles that impact the release and success of a movie.

Veteran Ghanaian actor, Fred Amugi has spoken out about his frustrations with the unending litigation over the leadership of the Actors Guild of Ghana, which is hurting the growth of the movie industry.

He mentioned that the absence of a functioning and effective leadership to steer the affairs of the sector had slowed things down for the industry.

Mr Amugi prayed the Guild would settle their differences and get back on its feet.

“The film industry is like any other business. It has its ups and downs. However, for the past few years, it’s been having issues of power struggles and conflicts, especially within the Ghana Actors Guild. This has led to a decline in productivity and quality because what’s being produced is not checked. We’re lucky to have Akwaaba Magic on DStv, which has provided a platform for our films.

“They’ve been supportive and willing to work with us, and the films they show are good. If we keep making good films, we’ll benefit from their support. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s film industry is ahead of ours. They have more opportunities with subscription-based streaming services such as Netflix, and we need to work together to catch up.”

These power struggles, among others, have significantly impacted the movie industry. However, it’s worth noting that the industry is resilient and has consistently evolved to overcome various challenges throughout its history.

Absence of Collaboration Hinders Production

The lack of collaboration and cooperation in the movie industry indeed hinders the production of high-quality films that compete favorably.

In the highly competitive movie industry, ego and a cutthroat mentality prevail, leading to a lack of collaboration. Filmmakers prioritize their interests and visions over working together to create the best possible film.

Filmmaking is a collaborative art form that involves the input of various professionals, such as directors, writers, actors, and producers. When there are conflicting creative visions or disagreements, it impedes collaboration and hinders the quality of the final product.

Money plays a significant role in the movie industry, and financial concerns sometimes override creative collaboration. Studios and producers prioritize commercial success over artistic integrity, which limits the willingness to work together to create innovative and high-quality films.

Collaboration requires trust and open communication among all parties involved. If there is a lack of trust between filmmakers, actors, or other professionals, it creates an environment that inhibits cooperation, hindering the production of high-quality films.

Addressing these concerns requires a shift in mindset and a commitment to fostering collaboration and cooperation within the industry.

Establishing an environment where all professionals involved in the filmmaking process feel heard and respected promotes collaboration. Open lines of communication lead to the exchange of ideas and constructive feedback.

Reminding all stakeholders of the common objective of creating high-quality films helps align interests and encourage collaboration. When everyone understands the ultimate goal, it becomes easier to work together towards achieving it.

Allowing filmmakers and artists the freedom to express their creativity leads to more innovative and unique films. Encouraging collaboration while respecting individual creative visions results in a more diverse and compelling range of movies.

Creating platforms or events that facilitate collaboration among professionals in the movie industry fosters networking, and idea-sharing, and ultimately leads to more cooperative efforts in film production.

Mr. Amugi shared his concerns about the lack of collaboration and cooperation in the industry, which he believes is hindering the production of high-quality films that can favorably compete anywhere.

“The film industry in Ghana needs unity. Currently, everyone is working alone because they’re afraid of being copied. The truth, however, is that no matter how much we know, someone else always knows more.

“If we work together in unity, we could make great films that showcase our different talents and perspectives. If we are united, we could even gain enough recognition in prestigious awards such as the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).”

Fred Amugi

Industry leaders, professionals, and stakeholders need to recognize the value of collaboration and cooperation in creating high-quality films. By addressing these concerns and promoting a more collaborative environment, the movie industry needs to produce films that favorably compete anywhere.
