Dr. Bawumia weighed in on Wontumi arrest

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s Presidential Candidate for the 2024 election, countered former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that the current NPP government has collapsed the country’s economy.

He pointed out that despite inheriting a challenging economic situation, the NPP has still outperformed the erstwhile NDC administration.

Dr. Bawumia contended that the previous NDC administration had left Ghanaians with a legacy of Dumsor and unemployment, whereas the current NPP government has made significant strides in job creation, generating 1.2 million jobs in the public sector and 975,000 jobs in the private sector, despite operating in an economy that Mahama describes as collapsed.

“And all of this is data that we have put out for everybody. We’ve constructed more roads than any other government in the Fourth Republic. Done more railways, done more airports, built more public libraries than any other government in the Fourth Republic. Built more courts…we are in the process of building 120 court buildings, 80 have been completed”.

Furthermore, the Vice President highlighted that the current government is making significant investments in healthcare infrastructure through the Agenda 111 initiative, which aims to build more hospitals.

He noted that the government has already completed eleven modern fish landing sites to support the fishing industry, demonstrating its commitment to improving the lives of fisher folks.

This, he emphasized, is a clear indication that the incumbent government has outperformed the previous NDC administration.

Dr. Bawumia further highlighted that the current government has made significant strides in improving sanitation, increasing access to sanitation facilities from 33% to 59%, which has led to a notable reduction in cholera cases due to a decrease in open defecation.

He emphasized that this achievement is evident in the fact that 5,400 communities have now been declared open-defecation-free, showcasing the government’s commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of Ghanaians.

Moreover, the NPP flagbearer stated that the sports sector has experienced significant growth under the current government, with the construction of 10 multipurpose stadiums, six of which are already completed “When we came in we had only three astroturfs in Ghana now, we have 150 plus”, he added.

NPP Transforms Economy With Innovative Ideas

Moreover, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia noted that the NPP has been spearheading a paradigm shift in the economy, going beyond mere routine management to introduce groundbreaking ideas and systemic changes that have revitalized the business sector and propelled economic progress over the past seven years.

“So if this is what a collapsed economy is, then I don’t know what his economy was in that regard. Because in all of these metrics that are routine in the area of development, we are doing better than the economy that he [John Mahama] was managing as President”.

Furthermore, the NPP flagbearer emphasized that the government’s transformational journey is centered on digital transformation, recognizing that businesses must embrace innovation and move beyond the status quo to succeed.

He noted that this vision is driving the incumbent government’s efforts to foster a thriving business environment.

Dr. Bawumia further indicated that the incumbent government’s digital reforms, such as the digital national ID system, have enabled efficient identification and addressed long-standing issues like age cheating, a milestone the NDC failed to reach.

“It brings discipline and addresses corruption in the area of ghost workers…because we are linking every worker to their fingerprint”. – Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Moreover, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that under the NPP government, mobile money transactions have skyrocketed from GHC 78.5 billion to GHC 1.9 trillion, positioning Ghana as the number one country in Africa for financial inclusion, with a substantial expansion in financial access for Ghanaians.

He attributed this success to the innovative initiative of the NPP government, which introduced mobile money interoperability among telecom operators and between telecom operators and banks, an achievement that has enabled seamless financial transactions.

Dr. Bawumia also indicated that, in contrast to the previous NDC administration, the current NPP government has made significant strides in digitizing public services, transforming the way Ghana’s public sector operates, and yielding impressive results in curbing corruption and boosting efficiency.
