The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration issued a press statement on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, announcing Ghana’s participation in the global commemoration of the 76th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, which will be observed on Wednesday, May 29.

According to the press statement, on the said day, the Republic of Ghana and the United Nations Office in Accra will join the international community in commemorating the 76th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

“The day will provide an opportunity for UN Member States to honor the memories of UN Peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to acknowledge the professionalism, bravery, and devotion of all men and women serving in UN peacekeeping operations around the world”.

Furthermore, the press release announced that the 2024 International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers will be observed under the theme ‘Fit for the Future, Building Better Together’, highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation in promoting peace and security.

As such, the Ministry indicated that this year’s theme highlights the crucial role of UN Peacekeepers in supporting countries as they transition from conflict to peace, and underscores the importance of collective efforts in building a more sustainable and peaceful future.

The theme additionally stresses the importance of adopting a more inclusive and cooperative strategy to tackle current and emerging security threats, recognizing that collective action and diverse perspectives are essential for effective and sustainable conflict resolution approaches.

Additionally, the statement noted that the UN Secretary-General’s New Agenda for Peace outlines a vision for multilateral peace and security operations to remain effective and relevant in addressing future crises and conflicts, providing a roadmap for adapting and strengthening these efforts to meet emerging challenges.

As such, the Ministry emphasized, through the press statement, that the New Agenda for Peace promotes a more integrated, adaptable, and cooperative strategy for tackling current and emerging security threats, recognizing that a united and multifaceted approach is crucial for addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century.

The Ministry also indicated that despite the numerous challenges they encounter, peacekeepers continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and dedication, working tirelessly alongside a diverse range of partners to advance the shared goal of peace and security for all.

Commemorating Decades of Dedication to Peace

According to the press statement, this year’s commemoration honors the remarkable achievements and dedication of military, police, and civilian peacekeepers over the past seven decades, recognizing their selfless contributions to promoting peace and security worldwide.

The press statement highlighted that this year’s commemoration embodies the essence of collaboration and progress, inspiring continued collective efforts towards a world that is more equitable, just, and sustainable for all.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that a solemn Flag-raising and Wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the prestigious Forecourt of the State House on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, to honor and pay respects to esteemed individuals or occasions.

Accordingly, the statement indicated that the Flag-raising ceremony serves as a powerful symbol of the Government of Ghana and its peacekeepers’ unwavering dedication to upholding the United Nations’ noble principles of promoting peace, stability, and security.

The Ministry also noted that this reflects Ghana’s steadfast commitment to protecting human rights and dignity worldwide.

“Other activities to mark the Day would include a Photo Exhibition of UN Peacekeepers and a Tree-Planting Exercise in memory of the fallen heroes”. – Ministry of Foreign Affairs

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers honors the bravery and sacrifices of peacekeepers worldwide.

The UN on this day, recognizes the selfless dedication of peacekeepers to promoting peace, stability, and security, and pays tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of a more peaceful world.
