Artists Advised to Refrain from Promotion of Brands on Stage

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of artists using award shows as a platform to promote themselves and their work.

While it is understandable that artists want to take advantage of the exposure that comes with being nominated for or winning an award, some critics argue that this behavior is inappropriate and takes away from the true purpose of these events.

Award shows are meant to celebrate and honor the achievements of artists in their respective fields. They are a time to come together and recognize the hard work and talent that goes into creating music, film, television, and other forms of art.

However, when artists use these events as an opportunity to promote themselves and their projects, it detracts from the overall spirit of the occasion.

Arguments against artists promoting themselves at award shows are that it comes across as self-serving and egotistical.

Instead of graciously accepting their award and thanking those who have supported them, some artists use their acceptance speeches as a platform to boast about their accomplishments and plug their latest projects.

This behavior is off-putting to both the audience and their fellow nominees, who feel overshadowed by the artist’s self-promotion.

Renowned music producer, Fred Kyei Mensah, also known as Fredyma has urged artists to refrain from promoting their brands when on stage to receive awards.

He cited cases where some artists at the just-ended Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) were announcing their upcoming projects.

“When they call you to receive an award, you don’t have to promote your brand and tell them about your upcoming projects, just be as brief as possible. If you go outside, the producers cut up those unnecessary aspects of the shoe.

“If a performance isn’t going well, they cut that part out immediately so those watching at home can’t see. I think we should incorporate such in Ghana to remove unnecessary parts.”

It is up to the artists themselves to decide how they want to conduct themselves at award shows.

While it is understandable that artists want to take advantage of the exposure that comes with being nominated for or winning an award, it is important for them to remember the true purpose of these events and to show humility and respect when accepting accolades.

By doing so, artists help to ensure that award shows remain a meaningful and celebratory occasion for all involved.

Disregard for Awards by Artists

Award shows have long been a staple in the entertainment industry, serving as a platform to honor and celebrate the achievements of artists across various fields.

However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable trend of artists showing disregard for the awards they receive when called on stage for their plaques. This behavior has sparked debate and raised questions about the significance of awards in the industry.

Many artists feel that these awards are often based on politics, popularity, and commercial success rather than genuine talent and artistic merit. As a result, they view receiving an award as a hollow gesture and choose to downplay its importance when accepting it on stage.

Some artists see themselves as rebels or outsiders within the industry and deliberately reject or downplay the recognition they receive to distance themselves from the mainstream establishment. By showing disregard for their awards, these artists try to convey a sense of authenticity and independence to their fans and peers.

Additionally, some artists simply express their humility and modesty when called on stage for their award plaques. They feel uncomfortable with the attention and praise that comes with receiving an award and choose to deflect the spotlight onto others or downplay their achievements to remain grounded and humble.

Regardless of the reasons behind it, the trend of artists showing disregard for their awards when called on stage is a complex and multifaceted issue. While some view this behavior as a sign of disrespect or ingratitude, others see it as a reflection of the changing attitudes and values within the industry.

Ghanaian entertainment pundit and media personality, Nana Romeo expressed disappointment over the lack of regard shown by artists towards the recently held Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Nana Romeo cited cases where some artists did not bother to accept their awards in person, despite being present at the event.

“My issue is with the reception of the award plaques. Most of the artists who attended the award ceremony disregarded it. They say the industry lacks support, but when it’s time for them to support something related to the industry, they drag their feet. They don’t even share flyers for the upcoming events.”

The significance of awards in the entertainment industry is a subjective and evolving concept. While awards serve as a valuable form of recognition and validation for artists, they are not the sole measure of talent or success.

Artists have the right to choose how they want to respond to receiving awards, whether it be with gratitude, indifference, or even disregard.

As the industry continues to evolve, it is important to recognize and respect the diverse perspectives and attitudes that artists have toward awards and the recognition they bring.
