In a powerful statement that reverberates through the political landscape of Ghana, George Opare Addo, Esq., the National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the party’s full endorsement of the upcoming “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration.

Scheduled for Tuesday, June 18, 2024, this protest seeks to address and counteract the corruption and state capture allegedly orchestrated by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration. The NDC Youth Wing’s clarion call for all Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to participate underscores the urgency and significance of this issue.

“This sale is just one in a series of nefarious actions by this administration. The sale of prime lands in Accra to government cronies, the mismanagement of the Agyapa Royalties deal, and the scandalous PDS debacle are all clear instances of state capture and corruption.”

George Opare Addo, Esq., the National Youth Organizer of the NDC

The catalyst for this protest is the proposed sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) shares in six valuable hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Bryan Acheampong, the current Minister of Agriculture.

This transaction, according to Opare Addo, epitomized the government’s corrupt practices. SSNIT, an institution entrusted with securing the pensions of hardworking Ghanaian workers, is now perceived as complicit in a scheme that jeopardizes both financial security and public trust.

These actions, Opare Addo argued, reveal a government more interested in self-enrichment than in serving the people of Ghana.

The NDC Youth Wing’s stance is unequivocal: the youth of Ghana will continually resist any attempts by Akufo-Addo and Bawumia to sell off state assets to enrich themselves and their allies.

“We will not allow this government to deplete our national wealth through its dubious and clandestine dealings,” Opare Addo declared. His words resonate with a populace increasingly disillusioned by what they see as rampant corruption and exploitation.

The “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration is more than just a protest against a single transaction; it is a broader call to action against systemic corruption. The NDC Youth Wing is mobilizing citizens to stand against these egregious acts of state capture, which threaten the nation’s integrity and future.

Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has been at the forefront of exposing these corrupt practices, was commended by Opare Addo for his relentless efforts to bring justice to this matter.

Opare Addo’s message to President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia was stark: the youth of Ghana will not tolerate continued corrupt practices.

“Your time in office is nearing its end, and the people of Ghana will ensure that you do not continue to sell off our nation for personal gain. Accountability is imminent, and we will stand firm against your corrupt practices.”

George Opare Addo, Esq., the National Youth Organizer of the NDC

The call to join the protest is not merely an invitation but a rallying cry for all citizens who believe in the integrity of their nation. It is a demand for transparency, accountability, and justice. The NDC Youth Wing is urging everyone to rise and make their voices heard, to demand that the government do what is right for the people.

This demonstration represents a critical moment in Ghana’s political discourse. It is a test of the youth’s resolve and their commitment to safeguarding their nation’s future. It is also a reflection of the growing frustration among Ghanaians who feel betrayed by those in power.

In these times of political turbulence, the importance of civic engagement and activism cannot be overstated. The “Hands Off Our Hotels” protest is a pivotal opportunity for the youth to demonstrate their power and influence. It is a chance to show that they will not be passive observers in the face of corruption but active participants in the fight for justice and integrity.

As the nation approaches the date of the demonstration, the eyes of all Ghanaians—and indeed, the international community—will be on those who choose to stand up against corruption. The outcome of this protest will be a testament to the strength and determination of the Ghanaian people to reclaim their nation from the grips of corrupt practices.

The NDC Youth Wing’s endorsement of the “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration marks a significant chapter in Ghana’s ongoing struggle against corruption. It is a bold and necessary step towards holding the government accountable and ensuring that the nation’s wealth is protected for future generations. The youth’s participation in this protest is not just a political statement but a powerful affirmation of their role as custodians of Ghana’s democracy and integrity.
