In a pivotal moment for Ghana’s agricultural sector, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to make agriculture his top priority if elected President in the 2024 general elections.

During a recent courtesy call on Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area, Dr. Bawumia outlined his ambitious vision to transform agriculture in Ghana.

Speaking on his campaign tour in the Upper East Region, Dr. Bawumia assured farmers that his administration would forge partnerships with other countries to adopt best practices and advanced technologies to significantly boost crop productivity.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to the agricultural sector is underpinned by a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing the core challenges faced by farmers. Key among his proposals is the establishment of District Agricultural Mechanisation centres across farming districts.

These centres will provide affordable equipment to enhance production, ensuring that farmers have access to the necessary tools to increase their yield.

One of the cornerstones of Dr. Bawumia’s agricultural policy is learning from countries with higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice.

“We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing.”

This approach underscores a commitment to modernizing Ghana’s agricultural sector by incorporating advanced techniques and technologies that have been proven effective in other parts of the world. By learning from these agricultural powerhouses, Ghana can significantly enhance its crop production and overall food security.

Shift from Chemical Fertilizers to Lime

Rising Input Cost

In addition to technological advancements, Dr. Bawumia is advocating for a fundamental shift in the way soil fertility is managed in Ghana.

“I want Ghana to move away from chemical fertilizers for our soil to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana and it is much cheaper than the fertilizer, and we want to help the farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Lime, a natural soil conditioner, has the potential to enhance soil quality by reducing acidity and providing essential nutrients. This shift not only promises to be more cost-effective for farmers but also aligns with sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term soil health and productivity.

Dr. Bawumia’s agricultural vision extends beyond immediate productivity improvements. He also emphasized the need for robust infrastructure and support systems to sustain the growth of the agricultural sector.

This includes improving rural road networks to facilitate the transportation of goods, enhancing irrigation systems to ensure reliable water supply, and providing financial support to farmers through accessible credit facilities.

By addressing these infrastructural and systemic challenges, Dr. Bawumia aims to create a conducive environment for agricultural growth, ultimately leading to increased food production, job creation, and economic development.

Education and training are pivotal components of Dr. Bawumia’s agricultural strategy. He envisions a future where farmers are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to implement modern farming techniques and manage their farms efficiently.

This will involve extensive training programs, extension services, and the dissemination of information on best practices and innovative technologies.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s commitment to prioritizing agriculture if elected President in 2024 marks a significant step towards transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector.

His vision encompasses adopting global best practices, shifting to sustainable soil fertility treatments, building essential infrastructure, and empowering farmers through education and training.

By addressing these critical areas, Dr. Bawumia aims to create a thriving agricultural sector that will not only boost food production but also contribute to the overall economic development of Ghana.
