McDan CEO Warns Against Politicizing Ghanaian Businesses

Dr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, has issued a stark warning against the politicization of businesses, a practice he believes is detrimental to the nation’s growth and development.

Dr. McKorley’s cautionary message comes at a crucial time, as political parties mobilize their bases and prepare their strategies for the upcoming election. His stance is clear: businesses should not be pawns in the political chess game. Instead, he advocated for unity and a focus on national interests above partisan agendas.

“I speak my mind, I stand for Ghana. Whatever we do, we have only one country; we cannot play politics with this country,” Dr. McKorley declared in a recent interview, emphasizing the need for a collective approach to the country’s future.

One of the most troubling aspects of Ghana’s political landscape, according to Dr. McKorley, is the cyclical nature of governance where new administrations often target businesses that flourished under their predecessors.

This pattern of behavior, he argued, is not only unjust but also counterproductive to the nation’s economic development.

This cycle of destruction and creation does more harm than good. It undermines investor confidence, stifles innovation, and disrupts the continuity needed for businesses to grow and contribute to the economy.

The uncertainty created by such practices can discourage both local and foreign investors, who may fear that their businesses could be targeted for political reasons. In the long run, this environment of unpredictability could lead to a stagnation of the private sector, which is a crucial engine of growth in any economy.

“Winner Takes All” Mentality

Another critical issue that Dr. McKorley highlighted is “We can’t run a country where ‘the winner takes all syndrome’ continues, then we will continue to languish as a country,”

This approach to governance, where the ruling party monopolizes power and resources, often leads to the marginalization of opposition parties and their supporters. It fosters a divisive atmosphere, where the focus is on short-term political gains rather than long-term national development.

The consequences of this mentality are far-reaching. It not only deepens political polarization but also hampers the formulation and implementation of policies that could benefit the entire nation. When power is concentrated in the hands of a few, the needs and aspirations of the majority are often overlooked.

“Businesses play a critical role in national development. They create jobs, generate revenue, and contribute to the overall economic growth of a country. However, when businesses are subject to political interference, their ability to perform these functions is compromised.”

In a thriving economy, businesses should be able to operate independently of political pressures. They should be evaluated based on their contributions to the economy, their adherence to the law, and their ability to innovate and compete in the marketplace.

When political considerations override these factors, the entire economy suffers. The politicization of business leads to inefficiencies, corruption, and the misallocation of resources—factors that can drag a nation’s development down.

Dr. McKorley’s message is a timely reminder of the importance of unity and national focus. In a country as diverse as Ghana, political leaders, business owners, and citizens must work together to build a prosperous future. This requires setting aside partisan differences and prioritizing the collective good.

A stable and predictable business environment is crucial for attracting investment and fostering economic growth. By putting the nation’s interests above partisan politics, Ghana can create a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive, ultimately benefiting all Ghanaians.

Dr. Daniel McKorley’s caution against the politicization of businesses in Ghana is a call to action for all stakeholders. By depoliticizing business and embracing an inclusive approach to governance, Ghana can pave the way for sustained economic growth and a brighter future for its citizens.
