The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially submitted his nomination forms on Monday, 9 September, marking his bid to contest the upcoming presidential election scheduled for 7 December 2024.

Dr. Bawumia filed his candidacy at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Accra, accompanied by key figures from the NPP and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

After formally filing the necessary documents, Bawumia addressed the media and expressed confidence in his campaign’s potential for success in the December polls. His remarks reflected his belief in Ghana’s established electoral processes and the transparency of the EC.

“Historically, I think Ghana is in a very enviable position as far as the conduct of elections is concerned. And I believe that madam chair and your team will live up to it. But let’s pray and continue to pray for God’s blessings for the Electoral Commission.”

The EC chair explained that the EC had put in place a stringent review process to validate the nomination forms for presidential aspirants.

“As part of the Commission’s effort to ensure a transparent, credible and accountable process, the Commission has developed a detailed checklist that embodies the criteria to be satisfied by presidential nominees as prescribed by law.”

This checklist will guide teams established by the EC to score and assess each submission. According to Miss Mensa, this process is designed to guarantee that every presidential aspirant meets the constitutional and legal requirements necessary for eligibility.

The EC’s firm commitment to transparency has been a cornerstone of Ghana’s democratic evolution, with the Commission consistently emphasizing its role as a neutral and fair umpire in the election process.

With less than three months until the election, the political atmosphere is heat up as parties rally their supporters and communicate their vision for Ghana’s future.

Dr. Bawumia’s filing of nomination signals the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a defining moment in the country’s political history.
