The Free the Citizens Advocacy Group has announced that, following a smooth and constructive meeting with the Ghana Police Service, both parties have reached an agreement on the route and schedule for the upcoming peaceful demonstration in support of the arrested galamsey protestors.

This demonstration aims to raise awareness about the issues surrounding illegal mining and to advocate for the rights of those who have been detained by the police from the previous protest organized by Democracy Hub.

“The police have assured their full cooperation, reiterating that the police are only present to ensure peace, law, and order and have tasked us to make sure protestors comply with the public order and safety act”.

The Free the Citizens Advocacy Group

According to the advocacy group, the demonstration is scheduled to take place from Thursday, October 3rd, to Saturday, October 5th, 2024.

Accordingly, the group urged potential participants to gather at 6 a.m. each day to prepare for the event, which aims to raise awareness about important social issues.

The group also indicated that the march will officially commence at 9 a.m., bringing together community members, activists, and supporters who seek to voice their concerns and advocate for change.

The organizers further emphasized the importance of participation and solidarity during this significant event.

According to a statement released by the Free the Citizens Advocacy group, the agreed-upon route for the demonstration will take participants through several key locations in the city.

The march will start at Legon Stadium and proceed to the Okponglo Traffic Light, then to the Shiashie/Standard Board Traffic Light, followed by Shangri-La, the Airport Traffic Light, and the Association International School.

From there, the march will continue to the National Service Secretariat, Castle Kawukudi, Kanda Highway, Acora High School Junction, Electoral Commission Office, and Ridge Hospital, before circling through the All Roundabout and Parliament.

According to the statement, the protest will then proceed past Osu Cemetery and Accra Sports Stadium, finally concluding at Independence Square, emphasizing the significance of each location in the community’s call for social change.

Group to Petition the Attorney General

Furthermore, the Free the Citizens Advocacy Group announced that on the first day of the protest, protesters will gather to submit a petition to the Office of the Attorney General, demanding the release of our brothers and sisters who are currently in police custody.

The group emphasizes the importance of solidarity and collective action, encouraging all participants to join together in this peaceful demonstration to seek justice and accountability within the legal system.

“Day 2: submit a petition to the minister of land and natural resources to put an end to the galamsey menace that is destroying our water bodies and our lives. Day 3: submit a petition to the parliament of Ghana, demanding that they pass a bill to put a ban on illegal mining practices and all other related issues”.

The Free the Citizens Advocacy Group

According to the group, members will hold a vigil on Day Three at Independence Square, ideally with “our released brothers and sisters” in attendance to show solidarity for their sacrifices in the fight for a better Ghana for all.

This vigil will serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of those who have faced unjust detention while advocating for their rights.

According to the group, dispersal is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, allowing participants to reflect on the day’s events and the collective journey toward justice.

The group underscored the creation of a space for unity, hope, and renewed commitment to the cause of justice.

As such, the group encouraged all citizens to join this peaceful call for justice and accountability to stand together for a better Ghana, as the public works towards a future where everyone’s rights are respected and upheld.
