In a confident and spiritually inspired statement, Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Constituency, has declared that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds the rightful majority in Ghana’s 8th Parliament.
Pointing to divine guidance and constitutional rules, Hon. Sosu urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to recognize their minority status and focus on legislative duties.
“Spiritually God has already changed the equation. In the beginning, NDC was majority and your side used violence and all kinds of tactics including the courts to score equal numbers: 137: 137.
“As we speak God has SPIRITUALLY given the NDC Majority and even the SC can’t do anything about that. In Daniel 2:21 Bible says ‘God changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning”.

His statement emphasized a belief in divine inevitability for the NDC’s parliamentary standing, despite past deadlocks of 137 seats on each side. Hon. Sosu’s comments also reflected on the changes impacting parliamentary numbers.
He explained, “It is not your fault that MPs on your party’s ticket decided to file nomination with EC to go independent in which case they seize [sic] to be members of your party and vacate their seats by the operation of Article 97 of the Constitution.”
His words highlighted how independent runs by Members of Parliament of the ruling New Patriotic Party have affected the party’s strength and the constitutional outcomes that followed.
Parliamentary Business vs. Court Battles
Hon. Francis Sosu further criticized the NPP’s judicial efforts to uphold their numbers, emphasizing that legislative duties should occur in the parliamentary chamber rather than through courts.
He remarked, “We will do parliamentary business in the Chamber of Parliament, not in the courts. We are waiting for the NPP Minority in Parliament. On the floor of Parliament, NDC constitutes the working Majority and that won’t change.”
The NDC has been strengthened by recent moves where NPP MPs chose to run as independents in the 2024 elections, arguing that under Article 97, MPs who officially contest elections independently vacate their seats.
Hon. Sosu did not hold back in criticizing the New Patriotic Party for demonstrating double standards on the same matter and switching positions.
He cited former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye’s ruling which vacated the seat of the Fomena MP during the seventh Parliament referring to them as “Wicked and unreasonable men without principles.”
He reiterated the National Democratic Congress Caucus in Parliament’s dedication to protecting and defending Ghana’s constitutional values and maintaining its parliamentary majority through in-house processes instead of external interventions.
“Our Majority in Parliament shall be defended on the floor of Parliament. Parliament is the House of Democracy, and we shall uphold our Democracy and the sanctity of the Constitution,” he stated, expressing the determination to manage the 8th Parliament until its conclusion on January 6, 2025.
Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza, the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Adaklu Constituency, echoed Hon. Sosu’s sentiments, offering a constitutional interpretation of Article 97. “It is an absurdity to say article 97 is about future elections. An election is a process, not an event,” Hon. Agbodza stated.
“No one has filled to contest the 2028 parliament elections this year. You need to win the 2024 parliamentary elections to be in the 9th Parliament on January 7th 2025.
“The only future parliament elections are those of 2028 and beyond. The 2024 parliamentary election is already in progress. It’s the present, not the future”.

He strongly emphasized that actions like filing and vetting of nominations already signify the 2024 elections are underway, making future-based claims about seat legitimacy flawed.
