The Office of the President has once again reinforced its directive prohibiting outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and other political appointees from acquiring official government vehicles at the end of the current administration’s term.
This directive aims to ensure proper management of state resources and prevent misuse as the transition to the new government takes place.
The Office emphasized that such measures are in line with maintaining accountability, transparency, and fairness in the transfer of power.
“At the conclusion of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, a directive was issued prohibiting Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and all other political appointees under the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463) from acquiring government vehicles”.

In a statement signed by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, it was reaffirmed that the directive regarding the prohibition of outgoing political appointees acquiring official government vehicles remains in full effect as the President’s second and final term draws to a close.
The statement emphasized that this policy is crucial in ensuring that state resources are managed responsibly and that there is a smooth, transparent transition as the current administration concludes its tenure.

President Ensures Integrity with Ban on Vehicle Acquisition
Furthermore, the Presidency reiterated that, while previous administrations have followed a convention allowing political appointees to acquire one official saloon vehicle through valuation by the State Transport Company Ltd., President Akufo-Addo has made it clear that this practice will not continue.
According to the statement, as the current administration comes to an end, no official vehicle will be made available for acquisition by any appointee.
The statement emphasized that this decision reflects the President’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of credibility, ensuring that the transition process is carried out with integrity.
“For clarity, all Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and other political appointees, including those serving as Chairpersons or Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations, are required to comply strictly with this directive”.

Accordingly, the Presidency stated that all government vehicles currently in the possession of outgoing political appointees must be returned to the Chief Director of the respective Ministries by no later than Friday, 3rd January 2025.
