This statement highlights his approach of careful assessment rather than abrupt action, ensuring that decisions are based on thorough review and necessity.

One of the major topics during his vetting was the use of drones in medical supply delivery, a service that has been instrumental in reaching remote areas. Hon. Akandoh, who had previously raised concerns about this initiative in Parliament, reiterated his commitment to scrutinizing the contracts associated with it. He acknowledged the value of drone services in healthcare delivery, stating;

“Let me first concede and admit the extent that the drone service is extending and supplying essential medications to hard-to-reach areas in this country, it is a fantastic idea.”

“Mr. Chairman, when this particular issue was discussed on the floor of the House, the idea was that they were not going to take money from the government coffers to pay for the drone service. Mr. Chairman, we are paying.”

“I have seen some contracts between the Ghana government and the drone service providers. Therefore, when I come I will take my time and then investigate.”

Hon. Akandoh was asked to outline the signature health policy his government would introduce, akin to how previous administrations were identified with landmark initiatives such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) under erstwhile Kufuor and Free SHS under Akufo-Addo. He emphasized;

“Mr. Chairman, for our manifesto, we have promised free primary health care, and we are going to ensure that primary health care is free.”

He elaborated on the establishment of a new initiative called the Mahama Care Fund, which would focus on the treatment of chronic diseases.

This proposed fund aims to reduce the burden of long-term illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases that require sustained medical intervention. He stated; “It is our determination to make sure that Ghana becomes pharmaceutical health dependent.”

This statement indicates a policy direction focused on enhancing local drug manufacturing and reducing reliance on imported pharmaceuticals, thereby strengthening Ghana’s health security.

Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s responses during his vetting highlighted his commitment to scrutinizing government contracts, improving healthcare access through free primary healthcare, and addressing chronic disease management through the Mahama Care Fund.

His approach to governance, as reflected in his responses, appears to be centered on due diligence, financial prudence, and a focus on sustainable healthcare policies.

As he awaits approval from the Appointments Committee, his policy proposals and commitments signal a potential shift towards a more accessible, self-sufficient, and financially accountable healthcare system in Ghana.
