As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) continues efforts to reposition itself ahead of the 2028 general elections, party strategist and communicator Dennis Miracles Aboagye has disclosed that internal discipline and focus remain paramount, even amid public scrutiny and political tensions.

He urged party members to keep internal affairs out of public discourse and avoid politicizing national challenges like illegal mining.

“Our party is going through a restructure, and I want you to hear me on this. We are rebuilding, and as part of the rebuilding processes, there are certain things we should do and shouldn’t do.

“One of the things we should not do is to be discussing obvious internal issues in the public space, in a manner with which some people have done”

Speaking on current developments within the party, Aboagye stressed the importance of restraint and loyalty during the party’s ongoing restructuring. He warned that public commentary on sensitive matters only weakens party cohesion and detracts from the broader message the NPP aims to present to Ghanaians.

He acknowledged that some party members had overstepped boundaries but noted that the leadership has taken steps to address such actions privately. “We’ve had conversations at the back end, and we’ve engaged and we’ve told them, listen, you may probably have fallen in that space and all but hold your horses for now.”

Furthermore, Aboagye confirmed Sarah Adwoa Safo’s involvement in the ongoing restructuring process, emphasizing that the NPP remains a big tent.

“The NPP is a big organization, once in a while, people will slip. So it’s okay when people slip and then get into that conversation”

He criticized those airing campaign-related grievances in the media, saying it adds no value to public discourse nor helps the party’s post-election efforts.

“Why should we come and discuss what happened with our party and our campaign in Sefwi Wiawso, or what happened on our campaign in any other place on TV? How does it benefit even the viewer?

“The viewer doesn’t care about that. The viewer simply cares about what alternative you are bringing as a political party to the economic issues, to their health sector, to their education”

Galamsey Struggle

Delving into to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, Aboagye called out President John Dramani Mahama for statements he believes emboldened galamsey operators.

“The reason why sometimes when I wake up and I see Galamsey issues, and the way this government is struggling with it, I feel like let’s just laugh at them is because we told them and they knew what we were saying was right”

He pointed to a controversial campaign comment by President John Dramani Mahama.

“It is wrong for you to go and stand on a campaign trail as a presidential candidate – and tell the people that ‘I don’t see why the NPP government will come and arrest you people in the pit.

“When I come to office, I would release all of you galamseyers who were arrested in the pit and give you your excavators and go for the kingpins’”

Aboagye also cited instances of senior National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials supporting galamsey activities.

He mentioned cases of how the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Petroleum Hub Corporation, Dr. Toni Aubynn, and NDC top Communicator Anthony Kwaku Boahene incited galamseyers against the NPP.

According to him, the incident which was captured on video showed the two party officials warning the illegal miners that their jobs would be terminated if the NPP won the 2024 election. They urged the miners to vote for the NDC so that galamsey as their ancestors have known it would continue to thrive.

Old River Guards Strategy

Aboagye further dismissed claims that the current government’s use of river guards is a new innovation in the fight against illegal mining.

“Tell me one thing that this government has done in the past four months about galamsey that was not in existence as of 7th January 2025, when they took over power, river guards?” he challenged.

He explained that river guards were already operational under the previous administration after they were commissioned by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to aid the former government’s fight against galamsey.

“River guards with their boats, with their drones? They have been there all this while,” he testified.

“They are not a novelty that the government has brought, which this country hasn’t seen before to fight galamsey.

“Is that what you promised us? Something that we were doing already, that you claim was not giving us results – that’s what you are doing?”

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, NPP Communicator

He argued that repackaging existing strategies and presenting them as new solutions will not address the core issues and so he charged the government to do better.
