The Tantra Hill underpass on the busy Achimota-Ofankor road (N6) has become the latest subject of public concern after a viral video surfaced online, revealing exposed iron rods on the structure’s retaining wall.
The footage, posted by social media activists known as the Buzsstopboys, sparked fears over the safety of commuters who regularly use this major thoroughfare in the capital.
In response, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, issued a formal statement addressing the issue, noting that actions are already being taken to repair the damage.
“An earlier assessment undertaken by our team of engineers revealed spalling over a localized area of the retaining wall. This situation has exposed the rebars, leading to theft by unscrupulous individuals.
“We wish to assure the public that the underpass remains structurally sound and safe for all users. Repairs would be carried out shortly to prevent further deterioration.”

The Highway Authority also condemned what it described as acts of vandalism and issued a stern warning to those engaging in such criminal activities.
Citing the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), section 114, subsection 4(b), the GHA reminded the public that tampering with road infrastructure is a prosecutable offense under Ghanaian law. “We strongly condemn this act of vandalism and wish to remind the public that tampering with public infrastructure is a criminal offense punishable by law.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has corroborated the findings of the Ghana Highway Authority, acknowledging that the deterioration of the retaining wall stems from weak and porous concrete used in its construction.
Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry, explained that the concrete had become so compromised that large sections had begun to crack and fall off, a process known as spalling, thereby exposing the steel rebars inside.
“Severe spalling and peel-off of concrete had occurred in the affected areas as a result of the weak, porous concrete, and that the exposed rebars from the concrete peel-off had corroded.”

He added that once rebars are exposed, they corrode rapidly, accelerating the breakdown of the surrounding concrete.
This sequence of deterioration then makes it easier for criminals to target and steal components like rods and bolts, especially under the cover of darkness.
In the viral footage shared online, clear visuals of the damaged area show exposed iron rods, some of which have already been removed by thieves.
The Ministry disclosed that the issue had been on its radar prior to the video’s circulation, and it had already initiated steps to correct the situation. “We have done all the estimates and selected the contractor, and we are hoping that he will mobilise to site and start the remedial works soon.”
However, he expressed frustration over the growing trend of vandalism against public infrastructure, describing it as both dangerous and costly.
“It is becoming one too many where people vandalise road infrastructure, especially street lights, bolts and nuts. We are also warning those engaged in such criminal activities to put a stop to them since they put the lives of all of us at risk.”
Nasir Ahmad Yartey

The Highway Authority echoed this sentiment and appealed to the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior around public structures.
“We urge all residents and commuters to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around public infrastructure to the nearest police station or the Public Affairs Division of the Ghana Highway Authority.”

GHA emphasized its commitment to ensuring public safety: “Your safety is our priority. Let’s protect our roads together.”
The case at the Tantra Hill underpass highlights broader concerns about the condition and security of Ghana’s road infrastructure, especially in urban areas experiencing heavy traffic volumes.
While the authorities work to expedite repairs, their calls for public cooperation signal a need for shared responsibility in preserving infrastructure intended for communal benefit.
With repair works expected to begin soon, the Ministry hopes that swift action will not only restore the damaged section but also deter similar incidents in the future.
Until then, commuters using the Tantra Hill underpass can be assured that the structure, despite its cosmetic damage, remains safe for use.
