Old Mutual and GUBA Partner to Secure Diasporans with Tailored Insurance Solutions

Old Mutual Ghana, one of the country’s foremost insurance and financial service providers, has entered a groundbreaking partnership with the Grow, Unite, Build Africa (GUBA) Diaspora Network.

This alliance is set to provide tailor-made travel and personal accident insurance packages, specifically designed to serve the unique needs of diasporans who maintain active ties with Ghana.

This partnership comes at a time when Ghana continues to attract a growing number of individuals of African descent returning for business, cultural engagements, and investment opportunities. The move by Old Mutual and GUBA promises to add an important layer of financial security for these global citizens.

The partnership aims to offer bespoke insurance solutions, including comprehensive coverage against medical emergencies, accidental injuries, and permanent disabilities. These services will be available whether diasporans are traveling within Ghana or internationally.

According to Roy Punungwe, Group CEO of Old Mutual Ghana, the collaboration with GUBA Diaspora Network aligns with Old Mutual’s mission to deliver inclusive and responsive financial solutions. “We recognize the growing impact of the diaspora on Ghana’s development and are proud to support their efforts with insurance products that provide confidence and security,” he stated.

Old Mutual’s approach reflects a broader vision to bridge the gap in insurance access among high-impact demographic groups, especially those who contribute significantly to both the local and global economies.

Diaspora Engagement on the Rise

Ghana’s appeal as a destination for diasporans has surged in recent years, thanks to its stable political environment, rich cultural heritage, and a rapidly growing investment landscape. Government initiatives such as the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” campaigns have helped attract more than one million visitors annually.

Moreover, remittances from the diaspora, estimated to contribute over US$4.5 billion to the Ghanaian economy, underline the critical economic role that this community plays. Recognizing these trends, both Old Mutual and GUBA have emphasized the importance of creating tailored financial services that match the diasporan experience.

David Ayisi, Tours Manager at GUBA Tours, highlighted the relevance of this new insurance solution.

“Our members travel frequently between Ghana and other global destinations for personal, professional, and investment purposes. This partnership with Old Mutual ensures they are protected against unforeseen risks, enabling them to operate with greater confidence and peace of mind.”

The partnership is not limited to insurance coverage alone. Both institutions envision this collaboration as a springboard for further initiatives. They plan to co-develop a broader suite of financial products that will respond to the evolving needs of diasporans—from savings and investment packages to retirement planning and beyond.

This kind of forward-thinking initiative reflects Old Mutual’s broader strategy to deepen its role in economic empowerment through innovative, accessible, and meaningful financial products. It also underscores GUBA’s ongoing commitment to fostering economic and professional growth within the diaspora community.

Old Mutual Ghana was established in 2013 as part of the wider Old Mutual Group, a pan-African financial services powerhouse with roots in South Africa. The company has since grown into one of Ghana’s top financial institutions, offering a wide range of life assurance and pension products. These include group life benefits, funeral plans, savings schemes, travel insurance, and pension solutions, all built on a solid foundation of local market insight and global expertise.

The GUBA Diaspora Network serves as a vital bridge between diasporans and Ghana. Through events, partnerships, and community-focused initiatives, GUBA supports individuals of African heritage who seek to reconnect with the continent through business, cultural exchange, or investment. The network is instrumental in facilitating economic inclusion and building a strong African identity across the globe.
