Veteran gospel singer, Amy Newman, has offered a deeply personal reflection on the intersection of motherhood and ministry.

Opening up about the early years of her music career, she shared how her desire to serve in church led her to make choices she now sees differently.

“I prayed to God, saying, ‘God, you know I don’t have anyone. Who will teach me how to bring up these children?’ Some suggested I hire maids. I thought I had a ministry, so I would leave my children with maids and go out there.”

Looking back, she admitted that those decisions had unintended consequences. “My children suffered because I thought I was doing God’s work,” she said.

Amy acknowledged that although her children had musical potential, her absence made it difficult to nurture those gifts.

“Even if you’re going on stage to sing, bring them on stage. It’s not about making a show… My mistake was leaving the children behind. They had the talent, but I couldn’t groom them.”

She revealed that her perspective changed after a spiritual experience. “God came to me and revealed the mistakes I made in raising my children… If I hadn’t repented, I would have gone and answered for it,” she confessed.

Still, Amy celebrated her children’s progress, proudly noting, “They are all well-educated and doing well.” She spoke of her daughter Hannah, a content creator who she says “took after me, but she’s overdone it,” she added.

The veteran Ghanaian gospel musician opened up about her early marriage and how it played a crucial role in rescuing her from a painful childhood.

The renowned singer behind “Okamafo Jesus” revealed that she got married at the age of 18 — a turning point she described as a divine intervention.

According to her, life as a child was filled with hardship and abuse. She explained that her father had many children with different women and later sent them to live with various relatives.

Unfortunately, Amy ended up with some particularly harsh family members. “They treated me badly,” she said, hinting that they may have seen something special in her — “a shining star” — and tried to dim it.

Recounting how she met her husband, Rev. Kwesi Newman, she said it all began when a cousin from Kumasi visited Takoradi and told her about a dance event happening in town. She joined in, not knowing that the man who would later become her husband was in the crowd.

Captivated by her performance, Rev. Newman found his way to her house the very next day to ask for her hand in marriage.

“He told me God spoke to him while I was dancing and said, ‘That’s your wife,’” she shared, calling it the day “God visited” her. The two got married soon after, and she began having children at age 20.

Amy Newman noted that their marriage has now spanned over 40 years and is blessed with eight children. However, the journey hasn’t been without challenges.

She recalled how people tried to defame her, calling her a “sexy dancer” in an attempt to tarnish her image.

Despite it all, Amy Newman continues to inspire many with her story of resilience, faith, and how love came at a time she needed it most.

Amy and Rev. Kwesi Newman appear to have one of the enviable love and marriage stories that the younger generation could learn some lessons from.

Amy Newman is known for her heart-touching songs such as Okamfo Jesus, Tsei Me Moborosu, God of Mercy, Seisei Me, amongst others.
