MOTAI to Celebrate 2025 MSME Day with Focus on Digital Empowerment and Sustainability

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MOTAI), in partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) and a coalition of development and private sector partners, has announced a national event to commemorate the 2025 International Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Day. Scheduled for Accra, the celebration will be held under the theme “Empowering MSMEs, Connecting Entrepreneurs for a Digital and Sustainable Future.”

The occasion will underscore the government’s commitment to harnessing digital innovation, strengthening institutional support, and driving inclusive economic growth across the MSME sector—widely recognised as the backbone of Ghana’s transformation agenda.

Speaking ahead of the event, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, reaffirmed the government’s determination to create a vibrant ecosystem that allows MSMEs to grow, innovate, and compete globally.

“MSMEs are the backbone of our national transformation, and we are positioning Ghanaian MSMEs to not only thrive locally but to become active players in global supply chains.”

She stressed that digital adoption is critical to unlocking opportunities beyond Ghana’s borders. “By embracing digital tools and platforms, our entrepreneurs can break traditional barriers, expand their market reach, and compete confidently on the international stage,” she said.

The Minister further appealed to development partners, financial institutions, and the private sector to rally behind government efforts to build a resilient MSME sector that fuels inclusive prosperity.

Driving Digital Adoption Among MSMEs

Highlighting the importance of this year’s commemoration, Ms. Margaret Ansei, CEO of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, explained that the 2025 MSME Day aims to accelerate digital inclusion and build long-term competitiveness among small businesses.

She revealed that at least 70% of MSMEs participating in the celebration are expected to adopt essential digital tools, including e-commerce platforms and digital payment systems. Additionally, 200 enterprises will be connected to mobile banking and digital finance infrastructure designed to improve their operations. “This year’s MSME Day is a call to action—empowering MSMEs through digital transformation and building long-term resilience,” she said.

Ms. Ansei emphasized that digital empowerment is no longer optional for businesses seeking to grow in a rapidly evolving market. From streamlining sales and payments to connecting with customers, digital platforms are poised to redefine the future of Ghanaian entrepreneurship.

Representing the United Nations in Ghana, Arianna Gasparri of the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) underscored the significance of the celebration within the broader UN agenda for sustainable development.

“This initiative is about more than funding; it’s about building resilient systems and unlocking private sector investment in underserved markets.”

She explained that the UN Joint Programme on Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSME Productivity, funded by the European Union through the UN Joint SDG Fund, aims to create an enabling environment where MSMEs can access affordable technology and drive economic inclusion.

Private Sector Partners Champion Innovation

Angela Mensah Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer for MTN Ghana, expressed her company’s commitment to supporting MSME growth. She highlighted MTN’s digital solutions, which help businesses manage their finances, engage customers, and improve productivity.

“At MTN Ghana, we’re proud to support MSMEs with smart digital tools and MoMo solutions that help them do business smarter, faster, and better.”

MTN Ghana, along with other corporate partners, will host capacity-building sessions during the celebration to help entrepreneurs integrate digital tools into their day-to-day operations.

The 2025 MSME Day will convene over 250 in-person participants, including policymakers, financial institutions, development agencies, and business leaders. An additional 1,000 virtual attendees are expected to join via livestream.

Activities will include a high-level policy dialogue, MSME business clinics, and a digital innovation showcase where entrepreneurs can explore new solutions and services. A Made-in-Ghana exhibition will also be staged to promote locally manufactured goods and celebrate the creativity of Ghanaian businesses.

Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to share their success stories, network with potential partners, and access support for compliance, financing, and business growth.
