Ghana security remains stable and intact, according to Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who expressed confidence in the nation’s safety during a press briefing on July 21, 2024.
Addressing the media during the Government Accountability Series, Dr. Omane Boamah affirmed that Ghana remains secure, stable, and peaceful, positioning itself for what he described as a new era of prosperity under President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda.
“We have kept our nation safe and stable, notwithstanding the irregular transfer of thousands of rounds of military ammunition in 2024 from the Ghana Armed Forces to the national security outfit. Ammunition which has not since been accounted for.”

The Minister emphasized that the country’s territorial integrity is being upheld through “coordinated land, maritime, and air operations.”
He described the nation’s overall security environment as “stable,” though he acknowledged that “the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains quite volatile.”
While discussing regional security challenges, Dr. Boamah emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces are actively observing developments and have established comprehensive security measures to prevent any escalation.

He explained that these efforts are aimed at ensuring a peaceful and long-lasting resolution to the ongoing conflicts through meaningful and sustained dialogue.
“In doing so, we shall always separate crime from traditional matters, enabling us to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who ferment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflicts.”

The Minister sought to reassure the public about ongoing peace-building efforts in Bawku, confirming that the government has committed to rebuilding the statue of the Zugraan of the Kusaug traditional area.
He indicated that this reconstruction will proceed even as investigations into the recent incident remain ongoing.
Army Prioritizes Ghana’s Security Amid Tensions
Broadening the discussion to the national defense strategy, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the country’s continuous efforts to confront modern security challenges, including terrorism and violent extremism.
He noted that in response to these growing threats, the Ghana Army had undertaken a multinational military exercise designed to strengthen the skills and operational capacity of troops drawn from several participating nations.

According to the Minister, in May 2025, the Army successfully coordinated with international partners, including the United States Army, to conduct “Exercise African Lion and Flintlock.”
These exercises, he said, were designed to strengthen the army’s readiness and tactical effectiveness.
“The Ghana Army, in collaboration with the United States Army, the Southern Eastern Task Force for Africa, and Special Operations Command Africa, successfully organized Exercise African Lion and Flintlock in May 2025.”

He noted that African Lion exercises were conducted in “Ghana, Tunisia, Morocco, and Senegal,” while Flintlock drills were held in Abidjan, with “94 troops of the Ghana army” participating across Cote d’Ivoire, Tunisia, and Morocco.
The Defense Minister stressed that the country’s active participation in these multinational drills underscores the country’s commitment to collective security in West Africa and beyond.

These collaborations, he argued, not only enhance military capability but also fortify diplomatic and security alliances critical to addressing transnational threats.
In summarizing Ghana’s security posture, Dr. Boamah declared that “while the overall internal and external security of Ghana remains stable,” the government remains vigilant and prepared to manage potential risks.
He concluded by reinforcing the message that Ghana’s peace and security are priorities, essential for ushering in the envisioned national progress.
Looking ahead, Dr. Boamah expressed optimism about the country’s future, stating that Ghana stands “ready to experience a golden age under the reset agenda of his excellency John Dramani Mahama.”
